Schumacher family to take legal action over fake AI 'interview'

Image
The family of seven-time Formula 1 World Champion Michael Schumacher are set to take legal action against a German magazine for a fake, AI-generated 'interview'. Outlet Die Aktuelle ran a front page, claiming an exclusive interview with Schumacher, who is still recovering from serious brain injuries sustained in a skiing accident in December 2013. "Answers from him" were promised in the article, but only after the purported 'interview' is it made clear that an AI chat bot had generated the interview, with Schumacher not taking part in any way. Steiner: I have 'no appetite' to take on rookie at Haas

Image
Guenther Steiner says he has "no ap Pet ite" to take on a rookie Formula 1 driver at Haas after a troubled period for the team. Steiner elected to drop experienced racers Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen at the end of 2020 for new Formula 2 champion Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin in the 2021 season. However, Mazepin failed to deliver and was sacked before the 2022 campaign after Russia's invasion of Ukraine, while Schumacher stayed on and scored points twice, but also suffered multiple heavy accidents and was replaced by Nico Hulkenberg, who Steiner felt was more in tune with Haas' midfield expectations. He partners Magnussen who replaced Mazepin, with the duo scoring points twice in the opening three races thanks to a 10th and seventh for Magnussen and Hulkenberg respectively. Steiner feels that the best way for Haas to catch up "is with people who know what to do" in the midfield. Viewed by others:

Jordan: Hamilton could eradicate Ferrari's problems

Image
Eddie Jordan believes that Lewis Hamilton would " eradicate " many of Ferrari 's problems if he moved to the team. Despite a difficult start to the 2023 season for Mercedes, Hamilton has previously downplayed the idea that he might be tempted to move elsewhere. However, that has not prevented speculation over whether the Briton may consider changing teams should the Silver Arrows' struggles continue, with ex-F1 driver Martin Brundle having questioned whether a switch to Ferrari might be feasible. Former team boss Jordan has now weighed in and suggested that Hamilton joining the Scuderia might be an ideal partnership for both sides. Jordan: Ferrari and Hamilton both need shaking up "There's only one place he could go to in my opinion and that is Ferrari," Jordan told Express Sport . " A guy with the talent that he is, and I think it might be a [match made] in heaven. I think Ferrari need shaking up and I think Lewis Hamilto

Domenicali concedes difficulty in winning over 'old people' with new plans

Image
Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has conceded recent changes to the sport have been " difficult to put into the hands of the old people ". A budget cap was implemented to help even out the playing field across the grid in 2021, with an initial $145 million limit reduced by $5 million each year, though a break was given to teams last season in the wake of soaring inflation. Sprint races were also introduced by virtue of a three-event trial in the same campaign, with the format now given six races this season as F1 aims to provide more on-track Entertainment across its three-day weekends. Whilst Red Bull has dominated the opening three races of the current season, the results of the budget cap's introduction have begun to show with the midfield pack grouped tightly behind in the battle for points. The time difference between the fastest and slowest times in Q1 at the season opener in Bahrain this term was 1.1 seconds, a reduction of almost a second from the

Wolff makes big promise: We will consistently bring upgrades

Image
Mercedes have promise d to be consistent ly bring ing upgrades over the "next few" Formula 1 races. Following their below-par start to the season - which prompted Team Principal Toto Wolff to promise a complete design revolution of their W14 car - Mercedes are playing catch-up to runaway championship leader Red Bull. A difficult Bahrain race was followed by gradual improvements in Saudi Arabia and Australia, which has offered hope that more pace can be extracted from the Mercedes car. The team now believes that there is a 'clear' design direction for the remainder of the season, which was thought to centre around a bigger upgrade package at the Emilia-Romagna GP, which takes place after the upcoming Azerbaijan and Miami Grands Prix. However, whilst Mercedes were still expected to bring new developments sooner than that to Baku, Wolff has now promised a consistent stream of upgrades in the 'next few races'. Viewed by others:

Vowles confirms F1 Sprint talks ongoing ahead of Baku 'mayhem'

Image
Williams Team Principal James Vowles has revealed talks remain ongoing over whether Formula 1 's Sprint format will change for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The Baku City Circuit will host the first Sprint event of the season next weekend as the four-week spring break comes to a conclusion. Concerns have been aired over the validity of the Azeri capital hosting a Sprint race given the tendency for incident, with teams constrained financially by a stringent budget cap. But ahead of the event, teams are understood to have agreed to alterations to the format that sees a race take place on Saturday, with tweaks set to bring in a second qualifying session to split the 100km Sprint from the grand prix on Sunday. These changes must be ratified officially, however, with Vowles confirming the saga continues ahead of the sport's return to action. Viewed by others:

Sainz angered by Audi switch rumours

Image
Carlos Sainz has been left angered by reports he is set to join Audi when the German manufacturer joins the Formula 1 grid. Audi has secured a minority stake in Sauber ahead of its introduction to the sport from 2026 when the Swiss-based outfit will morph into the works team for the Volkswagen brand in tandem with the incoming power unit regulations. A new extension to Audi's Neuberg facility is under construction to allow for the development of its power units, with the mechanisms needed for the design process under test, with the desire to test a first hybrid engine by the end of this year. But whilst the F1 project is in its infancy, speculation over who could drive for Audi has been rife. Mick Schumacher has been linked by virtue of his nationality whilst Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu have also been tipped given their current positions with Sauber. Sainz has also been strongly linked with a shift across, with ties to Audi through his father - Sainz Sr racing f

What major Mercedes reshuffle means for F1 charge

Mercedes ' struggles under Formula 1 's newest set of technical regulations have facilitated change in its ranks. James Allison and Mike Elliott have swapped roles ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix with the former returning as Technical Director just 20 months after handing over the baton to the latter to become Chief Technical Officer. So what has led to the switch, why can Allison turn the ship around and what difference will the changes make? Smedley identifies risk with new McLaren structure

Image
Former Ferrari engineer Rob Smedley has warned McLaren could find themselves "dead in the water" with their new Formula 1 technical structure . The team announced in March that Technical Director James Key had left the team, with his role being split into a three-headed structure of technical directors headed by Peter Prodromou, Neil Houldley and incoming signing David Sanchez from Ferrari, although he is on gardening leave until January 2024. It is reminiscent of the old McLaren structure, that was abandoned by CEO Zak Brown, and ex-Ferrari and Williams engineer Smedley believes it comes with risks for the team as they seek to claw their way into the big four. Hamilton recalls 'almost impossible' challenge of staying grounded in F1

Image
Lewis Hamilton has opened up about the challenge of staying grounded in F1, having found it "almost impossible" to do this at times in his earlier career. The Briton – who grew up in Stevenage – made his debut in the sport in 2007, and admits that it can prove difficult to avoid "levitating" when experiencing such a dramatic change of Lifestyle . Speaking to Australian broadcaster Fox Sports , Hamilton explained: "Let's be real, I think for anybody coming from a normal background – I grew up in a council estate, I grew up on my dad's couch, we didn't have a lot – and then all of a sudden, down the road, you're in the spotlight, things are thrown at you, you come into money... "It's almost impossible not to levitate. You lift off, you start getting your head into cloud nine, and it's hard sometimes to see the wood from the trees." How Hamilton stayed grounded In order to combat this, Hamilton says that he

Perez: Red Bull in 'very unique position' to have Ricciardo

Image
Sergio Perez believes that Red Bull are in a "very unique position " following Daniel Ricciardo 's return. After being left without a race seat in 2023 following his exit from McLaren, Ricciardo opted to become a reserve driver for the Milton Keynes-based squad, having previously raced for the team between 2014 and 2018. Ricciardo made his first F1 race weekend appearance of the year at the Australian Grand Prix and – whilst he didn't get behind the wheel – was a visible presence in the Red Bull garage throughout the event. The impact of the Australian's return has been praised by team boss Christian Horner, who suggested that it was a boost to have Ricciardo's "positive energy" around, and Perez has voiced a similar opinion. Marko addresses Vettel replacement rumours

Helmut Marko has addressed claims that Sebastian Vettel could take over from him as head of Red Bull's young Formula 1 driver programme. Vettel retired from F1 at the end of 2022 with 53 wins and four world titles, having been the first driver to graduate to Grand Prix racing from the young Red Bull programme in 2007. He would win the first race for Toro Rosso (now AlphaTauri) and the senior Red Bull team, claiming four of their six drivers' titles - with fellow graduate Max Verstappen the other two. Owing to his racing experience, push for equality and raising awareness of climate change, Vettel has been touted as an ideal replacement for Marko - who turns 80 on Thursday and whom has addressed those claims. "We are still in contact," Marko explained to Blick. "Seb is still in the self-discovery phase at the moment, I don't think he wants to Travel to every race again and work more with significantly less pay!"

Liberty: US F1 races will become 'distinctive' over time

Image
Each Formula 1 Grand Prix in the United States will find their "distinctiveness" over time, according to Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei with three races in 2023. Under the ownership of Liberty Media, F1 has experienced a boom in popularity in the US - a market the series has long craved a foothold in, with the Miami Grand Prix joining the calendar in 2022 to supplement the official United States Grand Prix in Austin. For 2023, another race will be held in America as F1 returns to Las Vegas for a Saturday night primetime race on the strip. It will be only the second time in the history of the World Championship that one country has held three races in a calendar year, although the Monza, Mugello and Imola races in Italy in 2020 was due to the COVID-19 pandemic and not through targeted expansion. And Maffei believes that the three races will eventually carve themselves out their USPs. Viewed by others:

Russell recalls being booed by F1 fans: It makes you think

Image
George Russell has recalled how it felt to experience booing from F1 fans at an event in 2022. There have been various incidences of booing at races over the past two seasons in the sport, with the behaviour seemingly aimed at different drivers and teams. Russell admits that, when he was targetted by this for the first time, it got him thinking. Russell on being booed by F1 fans "Last year, for the first time, I experienced some fans booing me on a driver's parade," Russell told Square Mile . "I'd never experienced that before. I'm a 24-year-old kid living his dream, just going out, working hard, trying to do his best, and you got these grown men booing you. "I laughed it off, but it makes you think." Russell has been increasingly thinking about the issue of mental Health , both in Formula 1 and the wider world. "It'a a funny old world. Many of us live on social media, which is an incredibly toxic place, espec

Hamilton's new project? 'I'm ready to go into space!'

Lewis Hamilton may have hit stratospheric highs in his F1 career to date – but the Briton may have his eye on reaching for the stars more literally. Speaking during the Australian Grand Prix weekend, Hamilton revealed that he had been speaking to SpaceX founder Elon Musk for some time, and that the Briton was keen for a visit into outer space . "It's not the easiest thing to speak to someone like that, because his mind is expanded, it's on such another level, you know, so I get all nervous when I'm talking to him," Hamilton said of his interactions with Musk. "Of course, I talked to him about did we land on the Moon? Where are we going next?" However, Hamilton added that he wasn't wild about going stratospheric any time soon, perhaps mindful of last week's test launch of a SpaceX Starship in which the rocket exploded in mid-air a few minutes after lift-off. "I am going, yes, at some stage, but I'll let some other people g

Wolff predicts 'interesting' challenge for Mercedes in new Sprint format

Image
Toto Wolff is expecting the new Sprint weekend format to pose an " interesting challenge " for Mercedes at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The Sprint will make the first of six appearances in 2023 during the Baku event, with a new Sprint Shootout also being introduced in place of Free Practice 2. This new session will set the grid for the Sprint, while Friday's traditional qualifying determines the order for Sunday's main race, and Wolff hopes that the structure can provide additional excitement for the fans. Wolff on new Sprint format "After just under a month with no F1 action, everyone's eager to be back out on track," Wolff explained. "Thankfully we've got plenty of that coming up. It's a busy window in the calendar with five races in six weekends, starting with Azerbaijan. "The racing in Baku is always dramatic and entertaining. It's a challenging track with the walls close, so there's no room for er

Aston Martin dismiss concerns over impact of break in calendar

Image
Aston Martin boss Mike Krack has dismissed any concerns over the recent four-week gap in the F1 calendar having an impact on the team's momentum. The squad had a strong start to the 2023 season, with Fernando Alonso claiming three consecutive podium results in the opening races. Lance Stroll, meanwhile, bounced back from a pre-season cycling accident to finish in the points in Bahrain and Australia, putting the team in P2 of the Constructors' Championship. Following the cancellation of the Chinese Grand Prix, a break in the schedule has taken place ahead of the upcoming race in Azerbaijan, but Krack is not worried about the impact of this. Calendar break does not change Aston Martin plans When asked if the four-week gap in the calendar had come at a bad time following Aston Martin 's run of success, Krack told media, including TheFOXposts.Com : "Yeah, but it's the same for everybody. "It does not really change anything [in] our
