What Formula 1 will be saying goodbye to in Abu Dhabi

Image
Like every other that has gone before, the final race of the 2022 Formula 1 season in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is a time for reflection. A time to think reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of the campaign coming to a close or perhaps left with the dreams of what might have been had X, Y or Z gone slightly differently. However, for some, they are bidding goodbye to the F1 paddock for what could - and in the case of at least one will, be the final Grand Prix of their racing career. There's also one or two things from the 2022 season which hopefully won't be a factor going into '23, so TheFOXposts.Com has rounded everything up ahead of the race weekend in Abu Dhabi. Farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye Although our departing drivers breaking into song and channeling their inner children from 1965 classic The Sound of Music, is unlikely, at least four drivers will be biding: ...

Alonso unveils tribute helmet to retiring Vettel

Fernando Alonso has unveiled a tribute helmet to former Formula 1 rival Sebastian Vettel ahead of his final race in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Vettel is retiring this weekend after a 15 year career that yielded 53 wins (and counting?) and four World Championships in 299 starts. Two of his titles were claimed in final race showdowns against Alonso in 2010 and 2012, beating him by four and three points, respectively to the crowns. In the last race, Alonso will sport a special helmet featuring Vettel's use of the German flag tricolour among his usual design. In an Instagram post, Alonso wrote: "Danke Seb, One last time sharing the track with you, It will be emotional and sad at the same time, but I wish you all the best for your next chapter." Hamilton makes comeback prediction for 'nuisance' Vettel

Image
Lewis Hamilton has predicted that fellow World Champion Sebastian Vettel will make a return to racing after retiring from Formula 1 at this weekend's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Both Hamilton and Vettel made their Grand Prix debuts in 2007, although the latter only joined full-time in 2008. The two drivers have won all but four titles between them since Hamilton's first title success in 2008. In their later years, the duo have morphed into the elder statesmen of the grid, speaking out on social issues and pushing F1 to take action to combat climate change - with Hamilton jokingly branding his former title rival as a 'nuisance' . The seven-time champion then predicted that Vettel would be back in a racing car soon after his planned 299th and final Grand Prix start. Hamilton on Vettel future "I think we always had such great battles," Hamilton told media, including The...

Vettel: Final F1 Friday practice feels 'funny'

Sebastian Vettel had admitted he felt a bit " funny " following the final Friday of his Formula 1 career at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Four-time World Champion Vettel is retiring this weekend after a 15-year career that has brought 53 wins from 298 starts so far. He was an encouraging sixth in the opening session for Aston Martin at Yas Marina, following that up with 12th in the second session. Speaking after his 300th day of Friday practice as a driver, Vettel felt that while it was Business as usual, he did feel the significance of the moment. "It's been like many other Fridays to be honest once you pull out of the garage, you get into your rhythm and do what you know best," Vettel explained to media. "[That] is to gather a lot of information and get into the groove of the car. "It didn't take long this afternoon and this evening the track changed...

Vettel was 'coming alive' in final F1 qualifying

Image
Sebastian Vettel was "coming alive" in Abu Dhabi Grand Prix qualifying, as he will line up ninth for his final ever Formula 1 race. Four-time World Champion Vettel escaped Q1 in the dying stages at Yas Marina and was able to advance through to Q3. Using only one set of new Slot tyres, Vettel's effort was quick enough for seventh, but was later shuffled down to P9, and will start alongside old rival Fernando Alonso once Daniel Ricciardo's grid penalty was applied. Alonso will aim to protect Vettel in final F1 race

Image
Fernando Alonso will aim to "take care" of Sebastian Vettel in the four-time World Champion's final Formula 1 race in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Alonso – who is sporting a Vettel tribute helmet this weekend – qualified 11th at the Yas Marina Circuit, with old rival Vettel ninth for his 299th and final Grand Prix start before retirement. However, as Daniel Ricciardo is set for a three-place grid drop for colliding with Kevin Magnussen in Brazil, it promotes Alonso to 10th, meaning that he will share the fifth row of the grid with Vettel. The two-time World Champion says he hopes to be able to protect Vettel during the race. Alonso on Vettel "I was very happy," Alonso explained to media, including TheFOXposts.Com , after qualifying. "It's not that we tried to help him, but we are trying to have an eye on him, when we see him in the mirror or when he...

Vettel will start his 299th and final Grand Prix from ninth on the grid after a strong qualifying session at Yas Marina, with Aston currently seventh in the Constructors' standings. Vettel: More important things than 'driving in circles'

Image
Former Formula 1 driver Sebastian Vettel says there are "more important things than driving in circles " after his final race in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Starting ninth, Vettel ran as high as fourth as he attempted a one-stop strategy, with his Aston Martin going on a late charge to recover after dropping to P19 following his sole stop. The four-time World Champion was hounding Daniel Ricciardo for ninth on the final lap, but could not get past as he finished his final season 11th in the standings on 37 points. Speaking after the race, Vettel was keen to see the bigger picture. Vettel reacts to final race "I feel a bit empty to be honest, but I can only repeat that the last two years have been very disappointing from a sporting point of view – but very useful and important to me in my life," Vettel explained after completing doughnuts on the grid. "A lot...

Hill expects Vettel to return to F1 'in some capacity'

Image
Damon Hill believes that Sebastian Vettel will return to Formula 1 "in some capacity " following his retirement from the sport. Vettel took part in his last F1 race at the season-closing Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, in which he scored his final point by finishing in P10 after starting from ninth on the grid. It marked another strong performance from Vettel, who racked up six points finishes – as well as several Driver of the Day accolades – during the latter half of the campaign following his retirement announcement in July. Hill believes that psychology can play a part in enabling a driver to perform well after deciding to leave the sport. "I'm particularly interested in how drivers can reignite that passion for driving," Hill told the F1 Nation podcast. "If they've got a tiny bit of doubt... Let's say you're doubting whether you want to be a racing driver anymore [and] you're not enjoying it, [it's] very difficult to perfor...

Brundle on Vettel – 'I don't think he'll be back'

Image
Martin Brundle doubts that Sebastian Vettel will follow in the footsteps of past champions by returning to Formula 1 following his retirement. Vettel announced earlier this year that he would retire from F1 at the end of 2022, making the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix his 299th and final race of a glittering career that saw him win 53 Grands Prix and four consecutive World Championship titles. At 35, Vettel is six years younger than F1 's current elder statesman Fernando Alonso, and speculation abounded during the Abu Dhabi weekend that the German may elect to return to F1 in future – as Alonso himself did in 2021 after a two-year break from the sport. Other World Champions to have returned to F1 after having previously announced their retirements include Michael Schumacher, Nigel Mansell and Alan Jones, but Brundle feels that Vettel's F1 chapter is now truly closed. "I remember a quite emotional interview with Fernando Alonso on the grid in Abu Dhabi 20...

Schumacher: We can't rule out a Vettel comeback

Image
Ralf Schumacher has suggested that Sebastian Vettel could be tempted back into Formula 1 in the future, despite his recent retirement. The Aston Martin driver took part in his final race at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, after calling time on his F1 career. In his column for Sky Sports Germany , ex-F1 driver Schumacher paid tribute to Vettel's achievements, and suggested that his heavy involvement in the bigger issues surrounding the sport could have taken a toll on the four-time World Champion. "Sebastian Vettel is a four-time world champion who has achieved great things. Formula 1 will miss Sebastian Vettel as a person," wrote Schumacher. "Unfortunately, things didn't go quite so well for him with Aston Martin. I would have wished differently for him. "What else do I associate with Sebastian Vettel? In addition to sport, Sebastian had environmental protection high on his agenda. "He took a very critical approach to this. Environmental pro...
