Steiner 'doesn't regret' previously disposing of experienced drivers

Image
Guenther Steiner has defended Haas' decision to previously gamble on inexperienced drivers, after signing F1 stalwart Nico Hulkenberg for 2023. Ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the Haas team confirmed that they would be dropping Mick Schumacher in favour of Hulkenberg, who has secured his first full-time F1 drive since 2019. F1 returnee Hulkenberg will be making his 185th Grand Prix appearance in next season's opening race and, when asked about the main reason for signing the 35-year-old, Steiner commented that his experience would be beneficial to the team. "He was in F1 for a long time, he was with teams in the midfield for a long time, so he knows how they work, how to make them better," Steiner commented to media, including TheFOXposts.Com . "Wherever he was the team always made progress, and that's our aim; to do that here. "Experience takes time to make and at the moment we don't have time, because we want to move forward. ...

Horner: No driver could repeat Verstappen's success in same car

Image
Christian Horner believes that no driver would have been able to match Max Verstappen in the same equipment in 2022 after Sergio Perez 's championship hopes ultimately came up short. The Mexican finished third in the World Championship following a battle with Charles Leclerc for the runner-up position in the season-closing Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Perez ended the campaign with 305 points, while Verstappen – who clinched his second title at the Japanese Grand Prix – racked up 454 points, as well as breaking the record for most wins in a season along the way. As Perez fought for P2 in the championship, his relationship with Verstappen came under the spotlight in Brazil when the Dutchman refused a team order to let Perez by, though both stated afterwards that the situation had been discussed and resolved. When asked whether there was any sense of relief that those lost points ultimately did not affect the outcome for Perez in Abu Dhabi, Horner stated that he was keen to lo...

Williams officially confirms second driver for F1 2023 season

Image
Logan Sargeant has been confirmed as Williams ' second driver for the 2023 season , taking the final seat on the grid. The American driver was already unveiled as Williams' intended driver for 2023 but was made to complete the Formula 2 season and wait to be officially announced as an F1 driver for next season. Junior drivers must acquire enough qualifying points to obtain a superlicence in order to race in Formula 1. Having earned 30 superlicence points through his junior career and FP1 outings, Sargeant went into the final F2 weekend in Abu Dhabi needing just P6 in the Drivers' Championship to reach the 40-point threshold for earning a superlicence. A finish of P6 in the Sprint race and a P5 in the Feature race secured P4 overall in the Drivers' standings, which completed the final hurdle in his quest for an F1 drive . Sargeant, the first American driver in F1 since Alexander Rossi in 2015, will replace Nicholas Latifi and race alongside Alex Albon f...

Szafnauer: Alpine would close 'Piastri loopholes' in future driver deals

Image
Alpine would look to prevent ' loopholes ', like the one found in Oscar Piastri 's Alpine agreement, from occurring again in future drive r contracts. After the announcement in July that Sebastian Vettel would be retiring at the end of the season, Fernando Alonso elected to transfer from Alpine and sign for Aston Martin to replace his fellow World Champion. This opened up a seat alongside Esteban Ocon, with Alpine planning to promote reserve driver Piastri to make his Grand Prix debut in 2023. However, as the team had not offered him a concrete race drive with them, the 2021 Formula 2 champion looked elsewhere and signed with McLaren, publicly rejecting Alpine's promotion on social media. Szafnauer: We should have done things differently As TheFOXposts.Com would later exclusively reveal in the Contract Recognition Board's ruling, failures on Alpine's side meant P...

Ex-F1 driver assesses Hamilton's retirement chances

Image
Former F1 driver Felipe Massa has questioned how long Lewis Hamilton will remain in F1, with the Briton looking unlikely to be challenging for the title this year. Hamilton is yet to sign an extension to his current Mercedes contract which expires at the end of the year, though he has maintained that he remains committed to the team beyond 2023. With 313 Grands Prix under his belt, the seven-time World Champion is statistically F1's most successful driver of all time, with a record 103 Grand Prix wins standing among countless other accolades. Hamilton was joined at Mercedes last year by George Russell, with the younger Briton outscoring his illustrious teammate and taking the Silver Arrows' only Grand Prix win of 2022, prompting Massa to suggest that Russell's presence may be giving Hamilton pause for thought over his continued participation in F1 . "I don't know if Hamilton will choose to stop," Massa told Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport ...

Palou calls for FIA to 'make it easier' for IndyCar drivers to enter F1

Image
Alex Palou has called for the FIA to "make it easier" for IndyCar drivers to enter F1. It comes after Colton Herta – the youngest driver to ever win an IndyCar race - was heavily linked with an AlphaTauri seat for 2023, but his hopes were scuppered as he did not have the required super licence points needed to compete in Formula 1. Palou, meanwhile, took part in Free Practice 1 for McLaren at the 2022 United States Grand Prix, and has since been named as one of the team's reserve driver for 2023. The Spaniard has collected enough super licence points himself, having won the IndyCar championship in 2021, but believes that the process needs to be improved for others from the category who hope to break into F1. Palou: IndyCar should be given more importance "First of all, I have my super license, so I don't care what's going on! It's easy for me to s...
