Tsunoda: I don't care about team leader role

Image
Yuki Tsunoda says he is not concerned by any team leader status at AlphaTauri in 2023, following the arrival of Nyck de Vries . Next year the Japanese driver will enter his third full season in Formula 1, and his first season as the more experienced driver at a team. Having raced against Pierre Gasly in his first two seasons, Tsunoda has generally served in a supporting role to the Frenchman, who has accumulated more points in their time together. With Gasly moving to Alpine for 2023, AlphaTauri have signed Nyck de Vries , who impressed in his F1 debut at Williams at the Italian GP. Despite Tsunoda being more experienced than de Vries, the Dutchman is around five years older and has spent a couple of years driving different F1 cars, raising questions about which driver will become the 'team leader'. When asked about his status for next season, Tsunoda responded by placing more importance on being the quicker driver and attaining 'number one' status th...

Tsunoda hopes 'big updates' for Imola can get AlphaTauri back on track

Image
Yuki Tsunoda is hoping that "big updates " planned for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix will get AlphaTauri back on track , after a disappointing start to the season. The AlphaTauri driver qualified in P17 but managed to recover to P11 in Miami after pulling off moves in the opening stages of the race, notably running side-by-side with Zhou Guanyu at the Turn 14 chicane before using his straight-line speed to get past at Turn 17. "It's kind of a trend of AlphaTauri, sometimes when the qualifying is bad the race is good. So obviously we have to find out why we are good, but it's really pretty surprising," he told media, including TheFOXposts.Com . "It's good that I'm able to definitely extract the performance every race – more than last year." Viewed by others: Analysis AlphaTauri ...

Is Tsunoda ready for Red Bull? 'He needs another year'

AlphaTauri Team Principal Franz Tost says Yuki Tsunoda needs another year under his belt before he could reasonably be considered for a promotion to Red Bull. After a troubled 2022 season in which he was overshadowed by then-teammate Pierre Gasly and committed several unforced errors, Tsunoda has been quietly impressive in the opening months of 2023, scoring AlphaTauri's only two points of the season so far and outshining highly-rated new teammate Nyck de Vries. AlphaTauri effectively serve as Red Bull's B-team, with several drivers having graduated to Red Bull from the junior side over the years, including incumbent Max Verstappen, along with Sebastian Vettel, Daniel Ricciardo, Daniil Kvyat, Alex Albon and Gasly. But despite Tsunoda's improved form so far in what is his third season in F1 , Tost says the Japanese isn't ready for a promotion to Red Bull just yet. "Yuki doesn't need good words," Tost told media, including TheFOXposts.Com . ...

Tsunoda: Zhou 'pretended' to go off in Spanish GP penalty clash

Yuki Tsunoda believes Zhou Guanyu "pretended" to go off the track after the Spanish Grand Prix Formula 1 crash that cost the former a points finish. On Lap 56 of 66 in Barcelona, Zhou attempted to drive around the outside of Tsunoda at Turns 1 and 2, but was forced into the escape road by the AlphaTauri driver, with both continuing on unscathed. However, the stewards felt that the move was enough to earn Tsunoda a five-second time penalty which dropped him from a ninth-place (and two points) finish to 12th and outside the points. Post-race, the Japanese racer was not impressed by the Alfa Romeo diving for the escape road, saying Zhou " pretended " to go off. Tsunoda unhappy with Zhou "To be honest, after I've given literally everything on every lap, I feel that it's a really harsh penalty ," Tsunoda explained to media, including TheFOXposts.Com , after Zhou, Pierre Gasly and Charles Leclerc were all promoted up one place o...

The team that could lose out if Sainz gets reinstated

Image
Carlos Sainz could potentially be reinstated to his fourth place if Ferrari successfully manage to appeal his post-race penalty at the Australian Grand Prix. The Spaniard dropped from P4 to P12 at the chequered flag, owing to a five-second time penalty that was issued after he made contact with Fernando Alonso during the second restart. Ferrari are appealing the penalty after Pierre Gasly was investigated for his race-ending contact with Esteban Ocon, but was not given a penalty by the stewards. Logan Sargeant also did not get investigated for colliding with Nyck de Vries , despite admitting to being at fault after the race. Tsunoda highlights vital mindset change in sophomore F1 season

Image
AlphaTauri 's Yuki Tsunoda has highlighted how his change in Formula 1 " mindset " has evolved during his second season in Grand Prix racing. After a strong start to his career in 2021, Tsunoda faded throughout the mid-part of his rookie campaign, but rounded it off with a strong fourth in Abu Dhabi. He partnered Pierre Gasly once again at the Faenza-based squad for '22, a season where he would have been hoping for further progress. It proved to be a difficult campaign for the team as the AT03 was overweight and lacked downforce, slipping to ninth in the Constructors' as Tsunoda only scored points in four races - and only once after the Spanish Grand Prix, the sixth round of the season. However, the Japanese racer - who will be joined by Nyck de Vries in 2023 - has explained how he himself has evolved and improved throughout his second season. Viewed by ot...
