Bottas' Australian GP helmet to be auctioned for charity

Image
Valtteri Bottas ' specially-designed Australian Grand Prix Formula 1 helmet is to be auction ed off in support of Save the Children. The Alfa Romeo driver has teamed up with contemporary Aboriginal artist Ricky Kildea to create two helmets, paying tribute to the Indigenous communities of Australia, who are often disadvantaged. After the event at the Albert Park circuit, one of the helmets will be auctioned off with all proceeds going to two projects. The auction will last between 28 March and 11 April, taking place on F1 Authentics. Norris highlights positive for McLaren ahead of Australian GP

Image
Lando Norris has highlighted a positive for McLaren to take from their difficult start to the 2023 F1 season. The squad have yet to score points after challenging weekends in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, with both Norris and Oscar Piastri retiring from the former with mechanical issues. While each driver finished outside of the top 10 in Jeddah – with Norris having picked up debris from a first-lap incident between Piastri and Pierre Gasly – Norris feels that the situation is not as bad as it may initially look for the team. Norris on McLaren's situation in 2023 "I don't think it's different to last year," Norris told media, including TheFOXposts.Com . "In a way, it's a little bit better than last year, [but] the field is tighter. "We've just had more issues, more reliability problems in race one. It was my mistake [in qualifying in Saudi Arabia], and the incident with Gasly cost us [in the race]. "It's not ...

Piastri the latest to take on home Australian GP 'curse'

Image
As the old saying goes, all Formula 1 drivers want to win at Monaco and their home Grands Prix. Failing that, at least a podium would suffice in front of the adoring locals before the circus is packed up, moved on and onto the next race. While Australia has had a few wins in Monaco down the years, and further podiums, one thing the country has never seen is an Australian driver (officially) on the podium in either Adelaide or Melbourne. F1 first went Down Under in 1985, meaning triple World Champion Sir Jack Brabham never got a home World Championship Grand Prix. 1980 champion Alan Jones raced in the two first editions, retiring from both, with the second in 1986 being his final entry and the famous title decider when Nigel Mansell's tyre exploded. Sir Jack's son David failed to finish either of his two races in Adelaide in 1990 and 1994, while Mark Webber and Daniel Ricciardo could only muster a best finish of fourth between them. Oscar Piastri is now the res...

Gasly explains what he's aiming to 'put right' in Australia

Image
Pierre Gasly is hoping to "put right" his lack of F1 points scored in Australia as the sport returns to the country. It has been a solid start to the 2023 season for Gasly, with the Frenchman finishing his first two races for Alpine in ninth place. However, he has warned that the team will need to "immediately" be on the pace if they are to add to their points tally at the Albert Park Circuit. Gasly ready for 'challenge' of Australian GP "Albert Park is a great circuit and another different challenge for us this year," Gasly said ahead of the race weekend. "We've seen how we are at a conventional circuit in Bahrain, a fast street circuit in Saudi Arabia, and now we will see how we are at Albert Park, which is different in characteristics. "It's a fun circuit, quite bumpy in places and we have to be immediately on it if we're to come away with a satisfactory feeling and points on the board. ...

McLaren issue bullish update plans

Image
McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella says his team are expecting three major upgrades throughout 2023, as they seek to bounce back from a disappointing start to the year. Along with AlphaTauri, McLaren are one of two teams not to have scored Championship points over the first two races of 2023 and have struggled with reliability, though Oscar Piastri showed the MCL60's potential by making it through into Q3 in Jeddah. Speaking on the eve of the Australian Grand Prix weekend, Stella said the first major update will come at the fourth race of 2023 in Azerbaijan, which follows a four-week period with no Grands Prix. "The improvement of car performance should start in Baku," Stella told media, including TheFOXposts.Com . "The improvement in Baku should affect an area of the car that, from the presentation of the car, we weren't entirely happy with. "In terms of development, it's just the first step. We would expect definitely another major up...

What time does the 2023 F1 Australian GP start?

Formula 1 returns to the Albert Park Circuit this weekend for the Australian Grand Prix. After being absent from the calendar in 2020 and 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, the event made its return in 2022. Charles Leclerc claimed victory on that occasion, with Sergio Perez in P2 while Max Verstappen was forced to retire due to a mechanical issue. With Red Bull and Verstappen arriving into this year's event with early leads in both championships, can they add another victory to their tally? When is the 2023 Australian GP? Piastri reveals why his first Albert Park track appearance was 2015

Image
Ahead of his home Formula 1 race debut, Oscar Piastri revealed that his first appearance on the track came back in 2015, when he was a 'grid-kid' for one of the drivers. The McLaren driver, who is making just his third F1 appearance , shared that he had once appeared as an F1 'grid-kid', who acted as mascots to the drivers ahead of races. "The last time I raced in Australia, I was still in go-karts. I think it was seven years ago now. So it's nice to get out on a race track in Oz," Piastri recalled to media. "Yeah, I was here last year as a reserve driver, and I was here, I think, 2015. "I was a grid-kid, actually for Dany Kvyat, so I was holding Dany Kvyat’s flag, and he broke down on the lap-to-grid, so I never actually got to see him! "But yeah, it’s pretty special to have someone holding my flag this time but hopefully I have better luck." Viewed by others: ...

De Vries responds to Tost's brutal 'no trust' comments

Image
Nyck de Vries has responded to the comments made by AlphaTauri team boss Franz Tost, who claimed that he no longer had trust in his engineers after a poor start to their season. AlphaTauri are yet to score points so far in 2023, with Yuki Tsunoda coming close in Saudi Arabia before getting overtaken by Kevin Magnussen in the closing stages of the race. Tost had criticised the engineers of the AT04 earlier in the weekend, claiming that the severe lack of downforce is what is stopping them from progressing further up the field. De Vries claims he felt no change in atmosphere within the team after Tost made the comments . "I honestly think the vibe within the team is great and I felt no difference post certain comments that have been made," said De Vries. "I think things can be taken a little bit out of context and we were all kind of scratching our heads. We all want to be as quick as Red Bull that is currently winning and dominating." View...

Perez confident of Red Bull support: 'They used to be one-car team'

Image
Sergio Perez is adamant that he has the same level of support as Max Verstappen , as both drivers bid for the 2023 Formula 1 World Championship. Verstappen's dominant performances against his teammates in recent seasons have made him the firm favourite to take this season's Drivers' Championship. The reigning World Champion enjoyed a one-sided battle against Perez in 2022, with the Mexican unable to match Verstappen's win rate. However, Perez's victory in Saudi Arabia has raised hopes of at least an intra-team battle for the championship, with Red Bull seemingly set to continue their impressive pace advantage. Hamilton gives further detail on split with Cullen

Image
Lewis Hamilton says that his split with long-time physio and trainer Angela Cullen was due to the nature of the 'challenging role' she had in Formula 1 . Ahead of the Saudi Arabian GP, it was announced that the pair would no longer work together after a partnership that spanned several years. Cullen was a close part of Hamilton's trusted inner circle, and the news was met with surprise to fans, and was followed by speculation about the reasons for the split. Alonso looking forward to 'even faster' Australian GP

Image
Fernando Alonso says this year's Australian Grand Prix will be even faster than last year's, as he seeks to make it three podium finishes in as many races in 2023. Last year's race was the first at Albert Park since 2019 after a Covid-enforced hiatus, with track changes seeing the removal of the chicane at Turns 9 and 10, creating a flat-out run from Turn 6 through to Turns 11 and 12. 2022 also saw the widening of Turns 1, 3, 6 and 13, along with the entire track being resurfaced for the first time since it was first laid in 1995. There are no new physical changes to the Albert Park track this year, but a key difference is the addition of a fourth DRS zone between Turns 6 and 11. This was set to be introduced for last year's race, but after being used during Friday practice, safety concerns saw it removed for the rest of the weekend. Viewed by others: ...

FIA clarify pitstop penalty process after Alonso confusion

Image
The FIA has clarified how Formula 1 drivers must serve in-race penalties following the confusion around Fernando Alonso in Saudi Arabia. Alonso was parked too far to the left of his grid box in Jeddah, and was hit with a five-second penalty, serving it at his sole pitstop. However, despite the penalty appearing to be correctly served, race control reported to the stewards in the closing laps that this was not the case - the rear jack appearing to touch the Aston Martin before the five-seconds had elapsed. Alonso was handed a further penalty, demoting him off the podium, but Aston later were successful in getting the decision overturned, reinstating the 100th podium of his career. A similar situation had unfolded with Alpine driver Esteban Ocon in Bahrain, with the FIA now clarifying that no equipment whatsoever must touch the car when it is serving a penalty . Wolff cools 'miracle' expectations: No Mercedes upgrades in coming races

Image
Toto Wolff has warned that Mercedes Formula 1 fans should not expect any ' miracle s' from their much-vaunted Imola upgrade package. Mercedes were forced into reinventing their W14 machine after realising their car concept was flawed, admitting in Bahrain that they had gone 'in the wrong direction'. An upgrade package is set for Imola, with Wolff suggesting that the teamed found chunks of time with it in simulations. Why F1 drivers were left 'blindfolded' before FP1 red flag

Image
If you ride onboard with any driver on the F1 TV app, you'll often hear engineers acting as 'spotters' as they tell them the gap to other cars on track. This is to ensure they can build up enough space before a lap so they do not encounter traffic, while also staying out of the way of drivers who are on a hot lap as the closing speeds can be quite fast. When FP1 in Melbourne was red flagged due to an issue with the GPS tracker, teams and drivers were effectively in the dark. What ensured was chaos as those on a hot lap encountered traffic, with Zhou Guanyu having to thread his way through a slow-moving Red Bull and Aston Martin at the penultimate corner. "Seemed like everyone was blindfolded once that GPS system went out," said Kevin Magnussen to media, including TheFOXposts.Com . "We know that we are relying on our engineers to tell us where the traffic is and I don't think everyone knew that the GPS system was out. "So when you don...
