Carlos Sainz has been left angered by reports he is set to join Audi when the German manufacturer joins the Formula 1 grid. Audi has secured a minority stake in Sauber ahead of its introduction to the sport from 2026 when the Swiss-based outfit will morph into the works team for the Volkswagen brand in tandem with the incoming power unit regulations. A new extension to Audi's Neuberg facility is under construction to allow for the development of its power units, with the mechanisms needed for the design process under test, with the desire to test a first hybrid engine by the end of this year. Pedro de la Rosa has predicted that the future Audi F1 team will ultimately be challenging for World Championship titles. It was revealed last year that Audi would enter Formula 1 as an engine supplier to coincide with the sport’s next planned regulation change in 2026. The Four Rings subsequently announced in October that they had entered into a strategic partnership with Sauber, with the German marque set to acquire the team and turn it into Audi's factory outfit. Ahead of Audi's official takeover of Sauber – currently badged as Alfa Romeo – the firm has already hired former McLaren Team Principal Andreas Seidl as CEO, and purchased a minority stake in the Swiss-based team. Audi have set out their goals for their partnership with Sauber ahead of their 2026 entry into F1 . It was confirmed in October that the manufacturer would make the Swiss squad their works team, with the two sides set to become "strategic partners".
