Binotto: Ferrari was 'in the fight' for win without Perez

Image
Ferrari Team Principal Mattia Binotto believes it would've been "difficult" for Carlos Sainz to pass Lewis Hamilton and George Russell at the end of the Brazilian Grand Prix. The team took advantage of a late Safety Car to pit Sainz for a set of used Soft tyres, which put him behind Sergio Perez at the restart. Given Perez was on Mediums that were several laps older, it meant that he was a lot slower at the restart and resulted in him dropping down from P3 to P7 by the chequered flag. Outgoing AlphaTauri driver Pierre Gasly says his now-former team are confident of being able to fight at the front of the grid in 2023. Gasly left the Red Bull sister squad for Alpine at the end of the 2022 season after two spells of almost five seasons with the team formerly known as Toro Rosso. The Frenchman is both the longest-serving and most successful driver to have been with AlphaTauri , taking a fairy-tale maiden Grand Prix win at Monza in 2020, and regularly finishing in the upper points positions across his stints with the Faenza outfit. After having finished sixth in the 2021 Constructors' Championship, AlphaTauri slipped back to ninth in 2022, with Gasly's fifth place in Baku the highlight of an otherwise lean year. However, the Frenchman said his now-former colleagues were bullish on a return to form in 2023. "[AlphaTauri] told me that next year their car will be the best they have ever made, and that they will fight at the front," Gasl...

Much time has passed since the Woking-based team were last in an F1 title battle, with their most recent Constructors' Championship victory happening in 1998. Their last win came via Daniel Ricciardo's P1 at the 2021 Italian Grand Prix, which marked their first victory since 2012. The team have faced some difficult times in the past decade, but Brown feels that McLaren are putting the right components in place for a return to success. McLaren putting team in place "If I look at the things that we need to get back to the front, you need two great drivers – I think we have those," Brown told the F1 Nation podcast. "You need your Technology , infrastructure, being state of the art and on par with the com Pet ition – we'll have that done by the end of the year. "We've talked a lot about the wind tunn...
