Wolff: Mercedes constantly 'peeling onions' in 2022 battle

Image
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff says fighting the problems with its 2022 Formula 1 car was like " peeling layers of onions ." The W13 proved to be Mercedes' worst F1 car since the W03 of 2012 with only one race win in the 2022 season as Lewis Hamilton went winless for the first time in his Grand Prix career. The octuple Constructors' champions slipped to third in the standings as the W13 proved troublesome throughout the campaign. Firstly it was affected by porpoising which tricked the team into believing solving this would improve performance. While it did, the porpoising was only masking a more serious, ingrained flaw with the concept - believed to be in the design of the floor which could not be rectified in-season. It is this continuous battle Wolff described as like "peeling onions." Wolff in the kitchen "We knew from the get go at the beginning [of...

Zhou reveals danger in 'crazy' F1 midfield battle

Image
Zhou Guanyu has labelled Formula 1 's midfield in 2023 as " crazy " and shared just how much impact a simple mistake can have on a race result. Alfa Romeo are in a clutch of teams in the lower midfield squabbling over position, with the outfit earning four points for Valtteri Bottas' eighth place finish in the Bahrain season-opener. Zhou has 16th and 13th place finishes to his name, and missed out on a Q3 berth in Saudi Arabia by just 0.050s on a strong weekend for him. He believes that the fine margins will be as important as ever given the competitive nature of the midfield in 2023. © XPBimages Zhou explains midfield battle "I mean realistically, we are fighting for P9 to P13 or P14," he explained to media, including TheFOXposts.Com . "Anything can happen and one little mistake or if one little thing goes wrong, you could be compromised from a points finis...

Alfa Romeo predict 'different story' each race in F1 midfield battle

Image
Alfa Romeo Team Representative Alessandro Alunni Bravi believes Formula 1's midfield order will continue to exchange positions throughout the season. Whilst Red Bull have stolen a march at the top of the standings by virtue of three dominant victories from three in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Australia, the picture behind the Milton Keynes-based outfit has been muddled. The battle for best-of-the-rest between Aston Martin, Mercedes and Ferrari has taken the spotlight, but the fight between the rest of the grid for the minor points has failed to follow suit across the opening rounds. Each of the 10 teams have scored so far, underlining the com Pet itiveness that the new technical regulations introduced in 2022 have brought. Alfa Romeo introduced a front nose update last time out at Albert Park, and with all teams focusing on fine-tuning development under the budget cap, Alunni Bravi has warned the pecking order may not settle for the entirety of the campaign. The hidden message sent by Perez to Verstappen in Miami battle

Image
Max Verstappen underlined his intentions to secure a third F1 World Championship with a scintillating performance at the Miami Grand Prix. The Dutchman fought back from ninth on the grid to take victory over Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez to dent the Mexican's optimism of a title challenge, following his Sprint-and-Grand-Prix double in Azerbaijan a week previous. Whilst the style in which Verstappen emerged with the win in the United States perhaps signals that there will be no championship battle between the two Red Bulls, Perez left an important marker during the race to prove he will not roll over for the 38-time race winner.
