OPINION: Should Binotto be replaced at Ferrari?

Image
Former BAR-Honda team boss Craig Pollock once opined that the role of team principal was the most challenging of all management positions: “There is no other job in the world where you are as publicly audited every fortnight, by extremely passionate people but with little or no knowledge of the overall picture.” The Scotsman, who founded the team that then became the mighty Mercedes steamroller, had a point: virtually every one of F1’s tens of millions of global fans hold critical opinions - more usually in hindsight - with their judgements generally being clouded by the travails of their favourite team or driver. Pollock spoke those words over 20 years ago, before the era of 1000-strong F1 teams; at a time when the internet was used for banking via dial-up modems and iPhones oohed at in sci-fi movies; Amazon lost millions daily and twitter was something birds did each morning; Facebook was a photo album and TikTok a nursery rhyme; Budget caps applied to grocery bills, Netflix ...

The eight drivers who will be replaced in Abu Dhabi FP1

Image
The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend is the final chance for some Formula 1 teams to meet a new rule for the 2022 season. Prior to the campaign getting underway, a new clause was added as Article 32.5 of the Sporting Regulations. Each car would have to be given up for one practice session to allow a rookie driver to get meaningful mileage in contemporary machinery. As it applies to each car - rather than each team - it means the likes of Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen are required to put their helmet up for a session while someone else drives their car. Heading into the final FP1 session of the season, some drivers have still not given up their car, including World Champion Verstappen. However, he will do so on Friday morning, along with seven other drivers . The table below has all the information about who is in, and who is out. Abu Dhabi FP1 driver replacem...

Wolff jokes about W13's 'special' place in Mercedes' collection

Image
Toto Wolff has jokingly revealed the "special place" that the W13 will take in Mercedes' collection of F1 cars. After winning eight consecutive Constructors' Championships up to and including the 2021 season, the team faced a more challenging campaign in 2022 and eventually finished P3 behind runaway winners Red Bull and second- place d Ferrari. The W13 was affected by issues such as porpoising, and ultimately proved a much more troublesome vehicle for Lewis Hamilton and George Russell than its predecessors. Hamilton has quipped that he will not be requesting ownership of this particular car, and Wolff acknowledges that it may not exactly take pride of place in Mercedes' line-up of Formula 1 challengers. Wolff reveals 'special place' for W13 "I think this car will always have a special place in our collection – very far back," Wolff joked to media,...

Former F1 racer hints at missed chance to replace Raikkonen at Ferrari

Former Red Bull Formula 1 driver Danill Kvyat has revealed that he narrowly missed out on a race drive to replace Kimi Raikkonen at Ferrari. Kvyat was promoted into the senior Red Bull squad in just his second season in 2015, out-scoring teammate Daniel Ricciardo, and he started 2016 well with a podium in round three in China. However, by round five in Spain, he had been demoted back to Toro Rosso, with Max Verstappen promoted in his place . The Russian driver, who now races in LMP2 in the World Endurance Championship, has revealed that at the time of the podium in Shanghai, a deal to replace Raikkonen was presented to him. "I was performing really well and had just scored another podium for the team," he explained to the Track Limits podcast. "At the time, I also had a proposal to race for Ferrari to replace Kimi. "This was going on behind the curtains and it was a difficult situation for me mentally too, from having been wanted by Ferrari and ...
