Bottas proud after Alfa Romeo 'sacrifice' Abu Dhabi GP for championship

Image
Valtteri Bottas has praised Alfa Romeo after the team sacrifice d their own results in Abu Dhabi to focus on preventing Aston Martin from beating them in the Constructors' Championship. With Alfa only four points ahead of Aston going into the weekend, the squad opted to try to make life difficult for their rivals at the Yas Marina Circuit in the hope of stopping them from scoring enough points to take P6 in the Constructors'. During the race, the team ensured that Zhou Guanyu undercut Sebastian Vettel at the pit-stops, while Bottas extended his stint on the Hard tyre to stay out on track before Lance Stroll made his second visit to the pits. While Zhou and Bottas ultimately finished outside of the points in P12 and P15 respectively, Stroll and Vettel's P8 and P10 result was not enough for Aston to overtake Alfa on points. The two teams tied on 55 points each, but Alfa secure P6 thanks to Bottas' fifth place at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix beating any resul...

Zhou exclusive: I'm proud to have immediately delivered in F1

Image
As Formula 1 entered its new era in 2022, not much was certain given the complexity of the new regulations. Would one of the big teams stumble and drop the ball or could a midfield runner find a loophole in the rules to steal an advantage a la Brawn in 2009 with the double diffuser? One thing that was guaranteed however was that Zhou Guanyu would win 'Rookie of the Year' award by dint of being the only rookie on the 2022 grid. Stepping up from Formula 2, Zhou was partnered at Alfa Romeo by Valtteri Bottas - who elected to depart Mercedes after five seasons as Lewis Hamilton's sidekick. China's first ever full-time Grand Prix driver feels that while he gave a good acquittal of himself, learning from 10-time race winner Bottas was also a crucial part of his maiden campaign. Zhou proud to have delivered Just before the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix brought down the curtain on his f...

Zhou reveals danger in 'crazy' F1 midfield battle

Image
Zhou Guanyu has labelled Formula 1 's midfield in 2023 as " crazy " and shared just how much impact a simple mistake can have on a race result. Alfa Romeo are in a clutch of teams in the lower midfield squabbling over position, with the outfit earning four points for Valtteri Bottas' eighth place finish in the Bahrain season-opener. Zhou has 16th and 13th place finishes to his name, and missed out on a Q3 berth in Saudi Arabia by just 0.050s on a strong weekend for him. He believes that the fine margins will be as important as ever given the competitive nature of the midfield in 2023. © XPBimages Zhou explains midfield battle "I mean realistically, we are fighting for P9 to P13 or P14," he explained to media, including TheFOXposts.Com . "Anything can happen and one little mistake or if one little thing goes wrong, you could be compromised from a points finis...

Zhou confident China will overcome F1 cancellations

Image
Zhou Guanyu is confident Formula 1 's popularity is rising in China despite the country's continued absence from the calendar. The series was due to return to the Shanghai International Circuit this weekend for the first time since 2019, only for China's Covid regulations to force a cancellation announcement in November last year. China has since relaxed its rules regarding visitors to the country, though the move came too late for F1 to act and reinstate the race to the schedule. The continued absence means Alfa Romeo driver Zhou will again miss out on enjoying the adulation of home support, with hopes for his wait to end in 2024 should China find a place in the bustling schedule. Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the race's intended slot, Zhou conceded: "I'm disappointed but I kind of saw this coming because of the restrictions, we didn't open the border early enough. "So when we had the race scheduled for April, I knew everything was to...

Zhou relishing competitive F1 field: It's all about the details

Zhou Guanyu is relishing the increasingly com Pet itive nature of the F1 mid field battle, despite Alfa Romeo slipping backwards in the pack. After ending the 2022 season in sixth place, the squad currently sit in P8 of the 2023 Constructors' Championship. During an eventful Australian Grand Prix, Zhou took advantage of the chaos to claim two points, his only points result of the campaign so far. Teammate Valtteri Bottas has four points to his name, highlighting Alfa Romeo's difficult start to the year. Despite this, Zhou feels that there are plenty of opportunities ahead for him and the team to score more points. "It is indeed not easy to pick up points this season because you are facing five strong front-running teams," Zhou explained in an exclusive interview with TheFOXposts.Com . "So as a result, you have to focus on the opportunities you get, like in Australia, where a lot happened during the race. "Every race weekend, teams bring upda...

Tsunoda: Zhou 'pretended' to go off in Spanish GP penalty clash

Yuki Tsunoda believes Zhou Guanyu "pretended" to go off the track after the Spanish Grand Prix Formula 1 crash that cost the former a points finish. On Lap 56 of 66 in Barcelona, Zhou attempted to drive around the outside of Tsunoda at Turns 1 and 2, but was forced into the escape road by the AlphaTauri driver, with both continuing on unscathed. However, the stewards felt that the move was enough to earn Tsunoda a five-second time penalty which dropped him from a ninth-place (and two points) finish to 12th and outside the points. Post-race, the Japanese racer was not impressed by the Alfa Romeo diving for the escape road, saying Zhou " pretended " to go off. Tsunoda unhappy with Zhou "To be honest, after I've given literally everything on every lap, I feel that it's a really harsh penalty ," Tsunoda explained to media, including TheFOXposts.Com , after Zhou, Pierre Gasly and Charles Leclerc were all promoted up one place o...

Silverstone make modifications to Turn 1 run-off after 2022 Zhou crash

Image
British Grand Prix venue Silverstone has made modifications to the Turn 1 run-off in response to Zhou Guanyu's 2022 Formula 1 crash . At the start of last year's race, Pierre Gasly was caught in a wedge between Zhou's Alfa Romeo and the slow-starting Mercedes of George Russell. As Gasly tagged Russell, the Mercedes was turned and clipped Zhou's car, flipping him into a series of rolls. He eventually came to a stop after vaulting the catch-fencing, and was stuck in the car until he could be extricated, although he was fortunately without injury. In response to the accident, the gravel trap to the side of the fast-right hander of Abbey has been removed and replaced with an asphalt run-off. Managing director of Silverstone Stuart Pringle explained that this was because Zhou's Alfa Romeo dug into the gravel, causing the car to continue rolling. As a result of the incident, the FIA also tweaked the rules for testing the roll-over hoop, with more stringe...
