Domenicali concedes difficulty in winning over 'old people' with new plans

Image
Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has conceded recent changes to the sport have been " difficult to put into the hands of the old people ". A budget cap was implemented to help even out the playing field across the grid in 2021, with an initial $145 million limit reduced by $5 million each year, though a break was given to teams last season in the wake of soaring inflation. Sprint races were also introduced by virtue of a three-event trial in the same campaign, with the format now given six races this season as F1 aims to provide more on-track Entertainment across its three-day weekends. Whilst Red Bull has dominated the opening three races of the current season, the results of the budget cap's introduction have begun to show with the midfield pack grouped tightly behind in the battle for points. The time difference between the fastest and slowest times in Q1 at the season opener in Bahrain this term was 1.1 seconds, a reduction of almost a second from the ...

Sainz picks rare highlight from difficult Miami GP

Image
Carlos Sainz says Ferrari picked the optimal strategy for the Miami Grand Prix, even though the Scuderia failed to challenge at the front. On a difficult day that laid bare the distance between Ferrari and the leading Red Bulls, Sainz started third on the grid but slipped to fifth by the flag, with teammate Charles Leclerc finishing two places further back in seventh. Making his pit stop on Lap 18, Sainz managed to leapfrog Fernando Alonso when the Aston Martin driver made his own stop a few laps later, but with Alonso's car working better than the Ferrari , he made it back past Sainz a lap later, and George Russell also overtook the Ferrari later in the race. Sainz was also slapped with a five-second time penalty for speeding in the pit lane, though this did not affect his final result. Viewed by others: Charles Leclerc ...

How Gasly protected his mental health after 'difficult' year

Image
Pierre Gasly admits that he prefers not to look back at any missed chances for points in 2022 in order to protect his mental Health . It was a difficult season for Gasly and the AlphaTauri team, with the Red Bull sister team slipping from P6 in the 2021 Constructors' Championship to P9 in 2022. Gasly also went from ninth in the Drivers' standings in the previous year to 14th in the latter campaign. As well as struggling to regularly finish within the points, the Frenchman incurred several penalties and as such will enter 2023 – where he will make his debut for Alpine – with 10 penalty points. This puts him increasingly at risk of a race ban, given that a driver is handed this punishment should they reach 12 penalty points within a 12-month period. Despite the ups and downs during the year, Gasly does not want to spend too much time ruing missed opportunities. Viewed by...

Leclerc selects a difficult Ferrari race as his personal best of the season

Charles Leclerc has chosen the Austrian Grand Prix as a personal best victory from an up-and-down 2022 season for Ferrari. The Monegasque started the season as one of the favourites for the 2022 Drivers' Championship, following a victory at the season-opening race in Bahrain. A win at round three in Australia underlined Ferrari 's early championship credentials, but their season fell away due to reliability issues, driver errors and operational mistakes. The 2022 season was still a marked improvement in performance for Ferrari, who took advantage of the technical regulation changes to emerge as an F1 frontrunner. When asked about his personal highlight from the 2022 season, Charles Leclerc picked his round 11 victory at the Red Bull Ring, a race which also saw the dramatic reliability issues that befell teammate Carlos Sainz. "My best one is probably Austria," Leclerc told media, including TheFOXposts.Com . "It felt particularly good after the pr...
