Marko points to Perez 'mistake' after Red Bull lose out on 1-2

Image
Helmut Marko believes that a key " mistake " cost Sergio Perez time after the Mexican lost out on P2 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Perez had gone into the race on level points with Charles Leclerc as the pair battled for second place in the World Championship behind Max Verstappen. While Leclerc opted for a one-stop strategy in the Grand Prix, Perez went for a two-stop and made his second visit to the pits relatively early. The Red Bull driver cut into Leclerc's lead over him in the latter stages of the race, but ultimately was unable to reach the Monegasque who claimed P2, while the win went to Verstappen. Perez ended the day in third, meaning that the Milton Keynes-based squad missed out on clinching their first ever 1-2 in the Drivers' Championship. Marko not losing sleep over Perez missing out on P2 Despite the team failing to secure what would have been a debut ...

Schumacher pinpoints the reasons for Latifi Abu Dhabi GP collision

Image
Mick Schumacher has blamed the visibility in 2022-spec Formula 1 cars for his collision with Nicholas Latifi in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. On Lap 39 of 58 of the race at the Yas Marina Circuit, Schumacher attempted an overtake on Latifi's Williams at the Turn 5 hairpin with both running outside the points positions at the time. As Latifi turned in, the Haas of Schumacher collided with the Canadian, causing both to spin and the Williams to hit the barrier. The German - who was announced as losing his seat for 2023 earlier in the weekend - was deemed at fault for causing a collision by the stewards and handed a five-second time penalty. Schumacher explains Latifi crash When asked about the collision, Schumacher commented on the reasons he believed the incident was difficult to avoid. "In general with these cars you don't really have a big overview of what is happening ...

Hakkinen points out Ricciardo difference over 2023 situation

Image
Mika Hakkinen expects to see Daniel Ricciardo back on a Formula 1 grid in the future - and believes his year off in 2023 is different to his own sabbatical, which later turned into retirement. Ricciardo lost his McLaren seat at the end of the 2022 campaign after poor performances alongside Lando Norris and was not able to rectify the problems. With no other race seats available - or appealing - for 2023, Ricciardo is set for at least one year on the sidelines as third driver at Red Bull - the team he left in 2018. Double World Champion Hakkinen believes that it is just a case of Ricciardo rediscovering his mojo - and that there is one major difference between Ricciardo's situation and when the Finn stepped back in 2001. Hakkinen on Ricciardo "Daniel is a good driver, but after some years in F1 a break can be important," Hakkinen wrote in his usual Unibet column. ...

Leclerc pinpoints three elements to Ferrari's 2022 title failure

Image
Charles Leclerc says tyre management, strategy and reliability are the three key elements to Ferrari's failure to challenge for the 2022 F1 Drivers' and Constructors' titles. After Leclerc won two of the season's first three races and established a 34- point lead at the top of the Drivers' standings, hopes were high that Ferrari could win an F1 championship title for the first time since 2008. However, a combination of factors helped Red Bull and Max Verstappen ease ahead of Leclerc and Ferrari over the course of the season, and the Monegasque noted that the Scuderia would have to improve on three key areas in 2023. Horner pinpoints key Verstappen difference in 2022

Image
Max Verstappen's "maturity" in the 2022 Formula 1 season has been highlighted by Red Bull boss Christian Horner as a standout trait in his second title-winning campaign. Verstappen entered 2022 as the reigning World Champion and put in one of the most dominant seasons in F1 History , having set new records for most wins in single a season (15) and most points collected (454). This was in contrast to the 2021 championship where he was locked in a white-hot fight with Mercedes' Lewis Hamilton, although Verstappen did still win 11 races and haul 395.5 points as he defeated the seven-time champion. Hamilton was not in title contention in 2022 thanks to Mercedes' troubles – and did not win a race for the first time in his F1 career – as Charles Leclerc stepped up to be the main title challenger in his Ferrari. After a troubled start to the campaign with reliability concerns, Verstappen hit his stride at Imola and would win 14 of the 18 races after the E...

Red Bull pinpoints 2022 moment that took Ferrari's 'breathing space'

Image
Christian Horner believes Red Bull's Formula 1 domination of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix weekend was a key turning point against rivals Ferrari . The Italian squad - of whom Mattia Binotto will step down as Team Principal at the end of 2022 - started the season with the fastest car as Red Bull battled reliability concerns. World Champion Max Verstappen retired in Bahrain and Australia as Ferrari's Charles Leclerc claimed 71 out of 78 points across the first three rounds - compared to Verstappen's haul of 25. However, at Imola Ferrari endured a tricky weekend: Carlos Sainz was punted off at Turn 1 and Leclerc threw a podium away with a late spin in a fastest lap attempt. It was this weekend which Horner specifically picked out as taking away Ferrari's "breathing space" in the title battle. Viewed by others: ...

Capito Exclusive: This year we earned points on merit, not luck

Image
Williams have been in the Formula 1 doldrums for a number of years - ever since their 2018 challenger proved off the pace before the relative disaster of '19 fed into their first-ever pointless campaign in '20. While on-track performance nose-dived, changes were afoot off-track. Sir Frank Williams elected to sell his eponymous team in the summer of 2020, having realised American venture capitalists Dorilton Capital were in a far better place to restore this great team to something mirroring respectability. But times remained hard throughout 2021 - with the passing of Williams aged 79 - but there were also signs of a recovery. Then driver George Russell was a Q2 regular and sometimes Q3 troubler as the team began to modernise and adapt 'the Williams way' to the demands of modern Grand Prix racing. The team had finished eighth in the 2021 standings with 23 points - helped via Russell's stunning P2 in the abandoned Belgian GP after an impressive qualifying...

Which F1 driver has the most penalty points after 2022?

The 2022 F1 season may have finished, but many drivers will still carry over penalty points accrued over the course of the campaign into 2023. Drivers can accrue penalty points for indiscretions over a given race weekend which are kept on their Super Licence for a 12-month period. If a driver reaches 12 penalty points within the 12-month period, they will receive an automatic one-race ban. Pierre Gasly is the driver most at risk of a race ban, with the Frenchman currently sitting on ten penalty points. The Frenchman is not due to lose any points until May 22, after the 2023 season's first seven Grands Prix - or six if the Chinese Grand Prix is not replaced. Behind Gasly, Lance Stroll and Daniel Ricciardo are on eight points - though with Ricciardo not set to race in 2023, his tally is less of an issue. At the other end of the table, Valtteri Bottas, Lewis Hamilton and Carlos Sainz currently have no penalty points against their names. ...

Why McLaren aren't getting carried away with Melbourne points haul

Image
McLaren Team Principal Andrea Stella says the Woking outfit are not getting carried away with their performance in the Australian Grand Prix, in which both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri scored points. McLaren had come into the Melbourne weekend as one of only two teams not to have scored Championship points over the first two races of 2023. But last Sunday's eventful race saw only 12 cars take the chequered flag, with Norris finishing sixth and Piastri taking his first F1 points finish in eighth place, resulting in McLaren vaulting up to fifth in the Constructors' Championship with 12 points. However, despite the optimism engendered by a better weekend, Stella said McLaren were keeping their feet on the ground, adding that the race's attritional nature had played into Norris and Piastri's hands. "We [aren't getting] carried away, we know that it was a very eventful race, but it's good to score points," Stella told media, including TheFO...

Albon pinpoints F1 tracks that 'suit' Williams after early-season promise

Image
Alex Albon has targeted the circuit characteristics that will suit Williams in their quest for F1 point s this season . The Grove-based outfit has made an impressive start to the new campaign as it fights back from a lacklustre effort last year, with Albon securing a point in the season-opening Bahrain Grand Prix. Despite signs of pace in Saudi Arabia and Australia, the Thai-British driver has failed to add to his tally whilst rookie teammate Logan Sargeant has struggled to pair promising pace with consistency. Albon was running well at Albert Park having qualified in the top 10, only to crash out early in the race in an accident Team Principal James Vowles explained was triggered by a chain reaction of events. Addressing the strong pace shown by the Williams FW45 across the opening three events of the year, Albon pointed to specific conditions that suited his machinery. Viewed by others: ...

Verstappen pinpoints worst weekend from title-winning 2022

Image
Max Verstappen has highlighted the Singapore Grand Prix weekend as the worst in his all-conquering second Formula 1 championship winning season. Verstappen crushed the field in 2022, claiming 15 wins from 22 races plus victory in two of the three Sprint events to host new records for most wins and points in a single season, respectively. Following a second place finish in Austria, Verstappen would go onto win nine of the remaining 11 races of the season, with Singapore and Brazil the two he did not after various incidents in both. While Red Bull admitted to set-up mistakes at Interlagos, errors in Singapore cost Verstappen throughout the weekend.
