How strategy is key to Verstappen sealing his 15th victory of 2022

Image
With Max Verstappen starting from pole he is looking to secure his 15th victory of the 2022 season. Behind him Sergio Perez and Charles Leclerc come into the race level on points battling over P2, as Red Bull looks to secure their first 1-2 in the Drivers' Championship. According to Pirelli a two-stop strategy might be the fastest option for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. This is due to increased tyre degradation compared to last year’s race, which has created question marks surrounding pre-event simulations. Two pitstops, with an average loss of 22 seconds for each tire change, is projected to be four to five seconds faster than a single stop. F1 775ced61cb15033c75.webp 1x"> © Pirelli Two sto...

Binotto hails 'fantastic' Ferrari strategy after troubled year

Image
Mattia Binotto has praised Ferrari's "fantastic" strategy team after they engineered a tactical 'dummy' radio call to trigger a Sergio Perez pit stop in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez were battling for the runner-up spot in the championship going into the finale level on points, but the Ferrari driver was behind following the first round of pit-stops. He was closing in on Perez and on Lap 34, was told to "box, opposite Perez." Perez and Red Bull bought this bait and covered Leclerc off, who then moved onto a one-stop strategy – setting up a thrilling chase, with the Mexican falling just 1.3 seconds short. In a year littered with multiple Ferrari strategic errors – including in Monaco, Britain, Hungary, Belgium and Brazil for Leclerc – team boss Binotto was quick to praise the under-fire department. Horner defends Perez strategy: He would've been a dying fly at the end

Sergio Perez missed out on claiming second in the Drivers' Championship by three points, after Red Bull put him on a two-stop strategy during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. In a direct race against Leclerc, Perez's hopes of finishing ahead were dented by Red Bull's decision to put the Mexican on a two-stop strategy , one more than Leclerc. After passing Lewis Hamilton, Perez had to close the gap to Leclerc in the final laps of the race. But with the time lost dealing with the Mercedes and back markers, it ultimately meant Perez missed out by 1.3 seconds at the chequered flag. Team Principal Christian Horner has defended the team's strategy to go for a two-stop, blaming the high degradation of the tyres on Perez's car. "I think Checo [Perez] just took a bit more out of the front right tyre," Horner explained to media, including TheFOXposts.Com . "You could hear him on the radio saying that the front [tyre] was dead and we could see that Fer...

How strategy will be key in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Image
There are three possible strategies that can be used to win the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, all of which involve a one-stop strategy. As shown in the Sprint race on Saturday, tyre graining is a big issue for the teams to contend with on the softer compound tyres. Those who started on the Soft found themselves towards the back of the field at the finish, so it is likely that the Medium tyre will be used most along with the Hard. F1 tyre supplier Pirelli say the fastest strategy is to start on the Medium tyre before switching to the Hard tyres between Laps 13 and 20. An alternative would be to start on the Hard tyre and switch to the Soft between Laps 38 and 45. It is possible to go on a two-stop strategy, which is slower on paper but could yield results if there is a stoppage. The first option is to start on the Medium, then a swap to the Hard between Laps 8 to 16, then another set of Hards between Laps 27 to 35. It is possible to start on the Medium and switch to the Medi...
