F1 to trial DRS usage changes in 2023 sprint races

Image
Formula 1 is open to the possibility of revamping how DRS works during Grands Prix - with trial s set to take place in the 2023 sprint races . The proposal from the meeting of the F1 Commission in Abu Dhabi has proposed activation of DRS to be brought forward one lap upon the start and restart of races from the current period of two laps. It is hoped by the Commission - attended by the likes of FIA President Mohammed ben Sulayem and F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali - that this change will "keep the field closer and encourage closer racing." Trial during sprint races Should the plan be adopted, it will not feature in Grand Prix racing before the 2024 season. At the six sprint races planned for the 2023 season, activation of the DRS will be trailed one lap earlier with the results evaluated before a final decision for '24 is made. President ben Sulayem described Formula 1 as b...

F1 teams to receive extra allowance for 2023 Sprint races

Image
Sprint races are now firmly part of the Formula 1 calendar, with their inclusion set to expand further for the 2023 season. Six events are planned throughout the campaign, up from the three that have been held in both 2021 and 2022 as the new format is trialled. There were some disagreements earlier in the year about the doubling of the number of the Saturday events, but terms were finalised between F1 and the FIA. In the 2022 season, teams had an allowance of $150,000 USD per Sprint race to be deducted from the end of year costs, with a further $100,000 available for damage repair. Given the number of Sprint races in 2022, this figure is set to increase. Viewed by others: Daniel Ricciardo Why Ricciardo was 'glad' not to be offered a to...

F1 unveils the six locations for Sprint races in 2023

Image
Azerbaijan, Belgium, the United States and Qatar are set to host Formula 1 Sprint races for the first time in 2023 as the schedule has been officially confirmed. Plans were made earlier in 2022 to increase the number of Sprint races from three to six for 2023, with teams set to receive extra allowance in terms of costs as a result. The format will remain the same, with qualifying taking place on the Friday to set the grid for the one-third distance Sprint, which in turn decides the grid for Sunday's main Grand Prix. The points system of 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1 will remain for the top eight finishers, with a total of 48 points on offer across the events for the winning driver. Below are the venues and dates of the 2023 Formula 1 Sprint races , with the first set to be in Baku for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. 2023 Formula 1 Sprint races ...

Wolff cools 'miracle' expectations: No Mercedes upgrades in coming races

Image
Toto Wolff has warned that Mercedes Formula 1 fans should not expect any ' miracle s' from their much-vaunted Imola upgrade package. Mercedes were forced into reinventing their W14 machine after realising their car concept was flawed, admitting in Bahrain that they had gone 'in the wrong direction'. An upgrade package is set for Imola, with Wolff suggesting that the teamed found chunks of time with it in simulations. And speaking after Australian Grand Prix practice, he gave an update on the new package, after drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell contradicted themselves. Liberty: US F1 races will become 'distinctive' over time

Image
Each Formula 1 Grand Prix in the United States will find their "distinctiveness" over time, according to Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei with three races in 2023. Under the ownership of Liberty Media, F1 has experienced a boom in popularity in the US - a market the series has long craved a foothold in, with the Miami Grand Prix joining the calendar in 2022 to supplement the official United States Grand Prix in Austin. For 2023, another race will be held in America as F1 returns to Las Vegas for a Saturday night primetime race on the strip. It will be only the second time in the history of the World Championship that one country has held three races in a calendar year, although the Monza, Mugello and Imola races in Italy in 2020 was due to the COVID-19 pandemic and not through targeted expansion. And Maffei believes that the three races will eventually carve themselves out their USPs. Viewed by others: ...

The races that never happened: F1's cancelled Grands Prix

Image
The cancellation of the 2023 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix is an historic first for Formula 1 in that it has become the first ever World Championship race to be cancelled prior to the weekend for weather concerns. Intense flooding and rainfall in Northern Italy led to F1 officially calling the event off on Wednesday 17th May after personnel were told not to come to the paddock owing to the conditions. With the series not wanting to place an additional burden on local emergency services in the relief and rescue efforts, the decision was made to cancel the event - with it seemingly unlikely that the race will take place this year. As such, it becomes the first race in 1,084 World Championship Grands Prix to be pulled before cars hit the track owing to the weather in what was the only conscientious decision that could be taken as running a major international sporting event in the middle of a disaster area would be inconceivable. But it is not the first F1 Grand Prix to ever be c...
