Wolff cools 'miracle' expectations: No Mercedes upgrades in coming races

Toto Wolff has warned that Mercedes Formula 1 fans should not expect any 'miracles' from their much-vaunted Imola upgrade package.

Mercedes were forced into reinventing their W14 machine after realising their car concept was flawed, admitting in Bahrain that they had gone 'in the wrong direction'.

An upgrade package is set for Imola, with Wolff suggesting that the teamed found chunks of time with it in simulations.

And speaking after Australian Grand Prix practice, he gave an update on the new package, after drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell contradicted themselves.

Wolff's Mercedes upgrade package update

"In the next three races, we won't be adding any performance," Wolff told Sky Sports F1 after FP2 in Melbourne.

"It is finding the best set-up solutions and having the tyre in the right window. We're doing good steps, good developments, but you've got to run them, confirm them and produce them.

"So I think we're not looking at introduction before Imola, and we want to do it right also.

"It is going in a good direction, but we suddenly shouldn't expect a miracle and be on pole by half-a-second.

"I think it is more about consolidating our position with Aston Martin and Ferrari and that would be a good step."

Aston Martin dismiss concerns over impact of break in calendar

Aston Martin boss Mike Krack has dismissed any concerns over the recent four-week gap in the F1 calendar having an impact on the team's momentum. The squad had a strong start to the 2023 season, with Fernando Alonso claiming three consecutive podium results in the opening races. Hamilton leads Russell to top Abu Dhabi FP1 as rookies return to action

Lewis Hamilton set the pace during Free Practice 1 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in a session featuring several rookie drivers. Hamilton hit the top of the timesheets with a lap of 1:26.633 on the Soft tyre, while Mercedes teammate George Russell was two tenths of a second back in P2. Charles Leclerc claimed third, ahead of Sergio Perez in fourth.
