Brundle on Vettel – 'I don't think he'll be back'

Image
Martin Brundle doubts that Sebastian Vettel will follow in the footsteps of past champions by returning to Formula 1 following his retirement. Vettel announced earlier this year that he would retire from F1 at the end of 2022, making the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix his 299th and final race of a glittering career that saw him win 53 Grands Prix and four consecutive World Championship titles. At 35, Vettel is six years younger than F1 's current elder statesman Fernando Alonso, and speculation abounded during the Abu Dhabi weekend that the German may elect to return to F1 in future – as Alonso himself did in 2021 after a two-year break from the sport. Other World Champions to have returned to F1 after having previously announced their retirements include Michael Schumacher, Nigel Mansell and Alan Jones, but Brundle feels that Vettel's F1 chapter is now truly closed. "I remember a quite emotional interview with Fernando Alonso on the grid in Abu Dhabi 20

Szafnauer on Alpine's 2022 – 'We deserve to be fourth'

Image
Alpine Team Principal Otmar Szafnauer says his team deserved their fourth place finish in the 2022 F1 Constructors' Championship. Just as in 2021, the Enstone squad finished some way behind Red Bull, Ferrari and Mercedes, but rose one place to fourth place in the overall standings after leapfrogging McLaren following a season-long battle. Alpine had scored an unlikely win in 2021, with Esteban Ocon's surprising but deserved victory at a chaotic Hungarian Grand Prix, and though the Enstone squad did not manage a top-three finish in 2022, they still increased their overall points total to 173, up from 155 in 2021. "I think fourth is probably where we deserve to be," Szafnauer said in response to a question from TheFOXposts.Com . "We should have a [few] more points than we do – we had some reliability issues. I look forward to next year fixing those. "We should have a more reliable powertrain next year, even though some of the issues we had were

Italian media: Binotto exit imminent at Ferrari

Mattia Binotto has reportedly resigned from his role as Team Principal at Ferrari, following intense speculation about his position after a difficult season for the Italian team. Italian media outlets Sky Sport and Corriere della Sera report that Ferrari will announce on Friday that the two parties are separating. Ferrari started off 2022 on a high by winning two of the first four races, which put Charles Leclerc 24 points ahead of defending champion Max Verstappen. But a spate of reliability problems, operational issues and driver errors enabled Red Bull to overtake them in the Drivers' and Constructors' Championships, ultimately going on to claim both titles. As a result Ferrari Chairman John Elkann is said to have lost confidence in Binotto, leading to him offering his resignation after 28 years at the team. This comes after prior speculation in Italian media, which the team was forced to deny earlier this month regarding Binotto's position at the tea

Mercedes says there is 'still a void' to fill after Abu Dhabi

Image
Mercedes believe there is "still a void to fill" with learnings of the W13 after their performance at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The team has enjoyed a recent resurgence at the end of 2022 with com Pet itive races at the US and Mexico, which culminated in their sole win at the Brazilian Grand Prix. At the start of the season it suffered the most from the porpoising effect and later aerodynamic drag, which affected drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell throughout the season. While Russell believes the work done to understand the W13's foibles will give them an advantage into 2023, Motorsport Strategy Director James Vowles says the team still has knowledge gaps to understand over the winter break. “Don’t think you can truly now or even across the winter state that we know everything about the W13," he said on their strategy video . "Across the year we learned and discovered a whole series of new items that really we had to understand and develo

Brown on Norris progress – 'I'm not surprised he's made it'

Image
McLaren CEO Zak Brown says he was convinced of Lando Norris' potential as a Formula 1 driver from an early age. Norris was signed as a McLaren junior driver in 2017, and graduated to F1 with the Woking-based team two years later at the age of 19. The Briton has impressed at McLaren, comprehensively overshadowing teammate Daniel Ricciardo over the past two years, and coming very close to winning the 2021 Russian Grand Prix before falling foul of a late rain shower. With Norris' stock on the rise, McLaren moved swiftly earlier this year to tie the Briton down until 2025. Norris is set to take on the role of team leader at Woking in 2023, with rookie Oscar Piastri replacing Ricciardo, and Brown says the Briton's rise through the racing ranks came as little surprise. "The goal was always to get him into Formula 1 . I'm not surprise d [that's he’s made it]," Brown said in response to a question from TheFOXposts.Com . "I guess you are surp

Brown: Superlicence rules 'should be reviewed' after Herta situation

Image
McLaren boss Zak Brown believes the FIA should review the super licence points system after Colton Herta failed to secure enough points to make a switch to F1 . The American was in talks with Red Bull to join the sister AlphaTauri team in 2023, but a major stumbling block proved to be getting enough superlicence points as he only has 32 points, with 40 the required standard. Herta has competed full-time in IndyCar since 2019 and contested in the Indy 500 the same number of times. By comparison, 2023 Williams driver Logan Sargeant has earned over 40 points through competing in the F3 and F2 feeder series. Brown says that the rules surrounding the superlicence should be looked at for the future, as he believes Herta is "definitely capable of being in F1." "I think the superlicense really just around IndyCar needs to be reviewed, I think it should just be the same as Formula 2," Brown said to media, including TheFOXposts.Com . "It's a shame C

Wolff calls for greater crypto regulation after FTX collapse

Image
Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff has called for greater regulation of cryptocurrencies, following the bankruptcy of team sponsor FTX. The cryptocurrency exchange company had prominent branding on the Mercedes W13 and driver race suits, but the eight-time Constructors' Champions removed all FTX logos ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix after FTX filed for bankruptcy on 11 November. Discussing the firm's collapse, Wolff expressed his disbelief and said the sector needed greater regulation to avoid such instances in future. "It's difficult, because we all know that crypto has relevance," Wolff told media, including TheFOXposts.Com . "I strongly believe in blockchain as a way of transactions in the future, but the situation is very unfortunate. "We considered FTX because they were one of the most credible and solid, financially sound partners that were out there, and out of nowhere, you can see that a crypto company can basically be on its kne

Russell explains why it's 'not easy' being teammates with Hamilton

Image
George Russell has been reflecting on his first season as Lewis Hamilton's teammate at Mercedes, with the young Briton admitting that it's "not easy" to race alongside the seven-time World Champion. Russell – who replaced Valtteri Bottas at the Silver Arrows for 2022 following a three-year stint at Williams – endured a tough start to his debut campaign, with the team struggling to match the pace of Red Bull and Ferrari. Despite this, the 24-year-old became a regular points-scorer and ended the year P4 in the World Championship on 275 points, while Hamilton finished a career-low P6 with 240 points. Russell also scored his debut F1 victory at the Brazilian Grand Prix in a 1-2 result for Mercedes . Russell reflects on being Hamilton's teammate After a difficult beginning to the season, Russell admits that the team have been on quite a journey throughout the campaign,

Albon opens up about 'really special' F1 drivers' night out

Image
Alex Albon has opened up about the F1 driver s' "really special " night out in honour of the retiring Sebastian Vettel at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. All 20 driver s got together for the meal over the weekend of the season finale, with several posting photos of the occasion on social media later on. Albon admits that the event was a memorable one. "The dinner, truthfully speaking, it was really special," he told the F1 Nation podcast after the race in Abu Dhabi. "It was a lot of fun. I think every driver, myself, my cheeks were aching, just smiling and laughing the whole time. So it was really good." When asked for more specific details, though, Albon was reluctant to share too much. "I feel like I'll get in trouble [if I] say," the Williams driver added. "I think that was a strict policy of the dinner itself. We can't say what happened. There were some very good stories being told."

Ocon bullish on title ambitions: I could compete with Verstappen

Image
Esteban Ocon believes he would be able to beat Max Verstappen in a championship showdown if Alpine can become a race-winning team. The Frenchman progressed through the junior championships alongside Verstappen and beat the Dutchman to the 2014 European Formula 3 Championship. Their on-track duels have been rare since: Verstappen's Red Bull career has yielded two World Championships and 35 Grands Prix wins, whilst Ocon only took his maiden F1 win at last season's Hungarian GP. In an interview with Dutch publication NOS , Ocon was asked about his current relationship with Verstappen, with the pair having come to blows after the 2019 Brazilian GP following a collision between the two. "We get along fine now and have a lot of respect for each other. I wish him all the best," Ocon responded. "He is simply a super talent now. Max is always and everywhere competitive and has been for years. "I've known it since I was a kid. Ever since karting h

Sainz reflects amid Binotto rumours: Rome wasn't built in a day

Image
Carlos Sainz has stated that "Rome wasn't built in a day" amid continued rumours over Mattia Binotto 's future at Ferrari . Italian media outlets Sky Sport and Corriere della Sera recently reported that Binotto and the Scuderia had agreed to separate, with Binotto said to have resigned as Team Principal. This follows on from prior speculation in Italian media, which the team were forced to deny earlier in November regarding Binotto's position at the team. After the season-closing Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Sainz was asked for his thoughts on the situation, and whether he would prefer change or stability within the outfit. Sainz reflects on Ferrari situation "I'm not going to get into what I prefer [or what] I don't prefer," Sainz told Sky Sports F1 . "I just know that, from experience, Rome wasn't built in a day, and you need to take in

Piastri identifies 'noticeable difference' after debut in McLaren 2022 car

Image
Oscar Piastri admits that he felt a " noticeable difference " after getting behind the wheel of a 2022 F1 car for the first time at the Abu Dhabi post-season test. The Australian – who will make his debut on the grid in 2023 with McLaren – joined his new team for testing at the Yas Marina Circuit, marking his debut drive in the current year's machinery. Piastri had previously tested for Alpine in their 2021-spec car during the season, and was also given one day's running in one of McLaren's year-old cars. Ben Sulayem: Rivals wanted Red Bull 'hanged' over cost cap breach

Image
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem believes some of Red Bull's Formula 1 rivals wanted the team " hanged " as further punishment for breach ing the cost cap. In the auditing process for the 2021 season, it was revealed that Red Bull were the only team to exceed the $145 million limit imposed, committing a so-called 'minor' breach . It was revealed that the team were $1.8 million over the cap, but a tax credit situation with United Kingdom authorities meant the team did not receive an expected rebate for engineering and technology research. This accounted for about $1.4 million of the overspend, with the FIA looking favourably on this and reducing the overspend to about $400k, or 0.37% of the available spend. As punishment, Red Bull were handed a $7 million fine and docked some of their development allowance for 2023, including wind tunnel and CFD time. Despite the penalties handed out, Ben Sulayem feels that even more draconian penalties were bei

Gasly will miss 'precious' teammate relationship with Tsunoda

Image
Pierre Gasly admits that he will miss AlphaTauri teammate Yuki Tsunoda as he departs the Red Bull sister team for Alpine. Gasly and Tsunoda have developed an amiable relationship off the track during their two-year stint together at the squad, with the pair often featuring in each other's social media posts. They have also participated in various activities documented in videos by AlphaTauri , including some karaoke sessions that proved popular with fans. Gasly believes that the relationship is quite a unique one for teammates to share. "Of course, I'll miss Yuki," Gasly told media, including TheFOXposts.Com , after the season-closing Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. "I think the relationship we have had as teammate s is not something you'll find in many teams, so it was quite precious . "But it's also part of the sport [and] your career that you move on. For sure, I'll miss him, and I wish him all the best."
