F1 announces new series to find next young talented female drivers

A new all-female series has been announced for 2023 by Formula 1 which aims to prepare young female drivers to progress to higher levels of competition. Known as the 'F1 Academy', the series will consist of five teams run by current F2 and F3 teams, each entering three cars to make up a 15-car grid. There will be seven events consisting of three races each, totalling 21 races along with 15 days of official testing. While it will not form a permanent part of the F1 support race package, it is expected to include one Grand Prix weekend next year. The announcement follows the collapse of the W Series 2022 season, which had to end early after the round in Singapore due to lack of funding. Red Bull junior Lawson leaves F2 for Japanese series

Red Bull junior driver Liam Lawson will swap F2 for Japan's Super Formula in 2023. The 20-year-old finished in third place in the 2022 Formula 2 championship, just 15 points away from second-placed Theo Pourchaire, while Felipe Drugovich clinched the title. Lawson also took part in Free Practice 1 sessions over F1 weekends for both Red Bull and AlphaTauri, and finished P5 on the timesheets in his outing for Red Bull on Friday at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Why FIA President hopes women's racing series are a short-term solution

FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem hopes that women's racing series will act as a short-term solution to bridge the gap to greater equality. W Series entered its third season in 2022, though the category was forced to curtail the campaign early in order to focus on securing investment for 2023 following financial issues. Meanwhile, Formula 1 announced the formation of the F1 Academy series in November. Beginning next year, the goal of the category is to develop young female drivers in order to prepare them for competing in higher levels of motorsport. With a focus on Equality, Diversity and Inclusion having formed part of his manifesto, Ben Sulayem would like to see all-female categories pave the way for women to climb the ranks. Zak Brown has explained how he feels McLaren benefit from com Pet ing in multiple categories of motorsport. As well as having raced in Formula 1 since 1966, the team have branched out into other series over the years and now take part in five championships in total. The McLaren name is seen in F1, IndyCar, Extreme E, Esports and Formula E, a category that the squad made their debut in at the 2022/23 season-opening Mexico City E-Prix. Brown believes that pursuing various series has been a positive for the company, though admits that the main focus when he arrived in 2016 was to move the Formula 1 team forwards. "There's a variety of benefits," Brown said in a McLaren interview when asked about the outfit contesting multiple championships.
