Red Bull junior Lawson leaves F2 for Japanese series

Red Bull junior driver Liam Lawson will swap F2 for Japan's Super Formula in 2023.

The 20-year-old finished in third place in the 2022 Formula 2 championship, just 15 points away from second-placed Theo Pourchaire, while Felipe Drugovich clinched the title.

Lawson also took part in Free Practice 1 sessions over F1 weekends for both Red Bull and AlphaTauri, and finished P5 on the timesheets in his outing for Red Bull on Friday at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Now the driver from New Zealand will make the next step in his racing career by joining Team Mugen in Super Formula.

Lawson moves to Super Formula

Lawson recently shared photos on social media after getting behind the wheel of Team Mugen's car at the Suzuka Circuit and spoke enthusiastically about the experience.

"This car around this track.. one of the best experiences I’ve had in a race car! Thank you @team_mugen.official," Lawson wrote.

The 2023 Super Formula season – which marks the category's 50th anniversary – will begin on 8 April at the Fuji Speedway and consists of nine races in total, with the finale taking place at Suzuka on 29 October.

Lawson is not the only Red Bull junior to have comPeted in the series. Pierre Gasly raced in Super Formula back in 2017 and only narrowly missed out on winning the championship.

The Frenchman went on to get his debut opportunity in F1 with the Toro Rosso team towards the end of the 2017 season.

Aston Martin dismiss concerns over impact of break in calendar

Aston Martin boss Mike Krack has dismissed any concerns over the recent four-week gap in the F1 calendar having an impact on the team's momentum. Lewis Hamilton set the pace during Free Practice 1 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in a session featuring several rookie drivers. Hamilton hit the top of the timesheets with a lap of 1:26.633 on the Soft tyre, while Mercedes teammate George Russell was two tenths of a second back in P2. Charles Leclerc claimed third, ahead of Sergio Perez in fourth.
