FE announces another new venue as full 2023 calendar confirmed

Formula E will race in Portland for the first time in 2023 to ensure the United States remains on the calendar in season nine of the electric racing championship. Previous E-Prixs in America have been held in Brooklyn, New York but renovation work at the dockside venue meant that it is unable to host an event in the coming season - one that will feature all-new cars. The decision was confirmed at a meeting of the World Motor Sport Council, with the calendar set to feature 16 races across 11 countries from January to July. Countries like India, South Africa and Brazil are set to host their first E-Prixs, while the full Monaco Grand Prix layout also returns. The Gen3 cars will feature in-race re-charging for the first time, with drivers being forced to swap cars mid-race in Gen1, while there is a power boost from the Gen2 era which closed at the end of season eight. ...

Vandoorne coy on F1 comeback hopes: I've had my opportunity

Image
Stoffel Vandoorne feels that it is "hard to judge" the likelihood of him returning to Formula 1 off the back of his championship success in Formula E . Vandoorne was previously given his debut in F1 with McLaren back in 2017, but found himself without a seat on the grid at the end of the 2018 season. Since then, Vandoorne has competed in Formula E and clinched the World Championship for the first time in the 2021/2022 campaign. The Belgian's Mercedes-EQ teammate Nyck de Vries – who himself took the title in 2021/2022 – has departed the all-electric series to join the AlphaTauri team in Formula 1 , but Vandoorne has played down his own chances of making an F1 comeback . Vandoorne: I've had my opportunity in F1 "It's hard to judge," Vandoorne told media, including TheFOXposts.Com , when asked at the FIA Prize Giving Gala whether de Vries' move to F1 –...

Formula E Gen3 cars on track for first time as testing begins

Image
The Formula E Gen3 cars have hit the track for the first time as testing gets underway ahead of the 2022/23 season. Just weeks before the debut race of the campaign in Mexico City on 14 January, all 11 teams and 22 drivers have been getting familiar with the new generation of cars on the first of a three-day test in Valencia. The debut session got underway at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo on 13 December, and it was Maserati MSG Racing's Maximilian Guenther who set the fastest time in the morning before going on to again top the timesheets in the afternoon session, with a quickest time overall of 1:26.221. It was a decent showing for the TAG Heuer Porsche squad too. Pascal Wehrlein ended the day in second, while teammate Antonio Felix da Costa claimed third. While Guenther's fellow Maserati driver Edoardo Mortara took P4, reigning World Champion Stoffel Vandoorne – who joins DS Penske for the new season – slotted into fifth. Vandoorne's teammate and fellow champion...

Video: Frijns breaks wrist in Formula E collision

Dutch driver Robin Frijns appears likely to require surgery after fracturing his wrist in the 2023 Formula E season opener in Mexico City. Moving from Envision to the returning Abt team for this season, Frijns started Saturday's race down in 19th as his team lacked pace. As the field jostled for position on Lap 1, Frijns was hit from behind by Sam Bird, which forced the Dutchman into the back of Norman Nato. Onboard footage of the crash shows Frijns' steering wheel being violently wrenched from his grasp as his front wheel made contact with Nato's Nissan. A statement by Frijns' team initially said that the Dutchman would require surgery in Mexico City, though this was later changed to read that Frijns was instead merely being examined at a local hospital. How McLaren benefit from racing in multiple series

Image
Zak Brown has explained how he feels McLaren benefit from com Pet ing in multiple categories of motorsport. As well as having raced in Formula 1 since 1966, the team have branched out into other series over the years and now take part in five championships in total. The McLaren name is seen in F1, IndyCar, Extreme E, Esports and Formula E, a category that the squad made their debut in at the 2022/23 season-opening Mexico City E-Prix. Brown believes that pursuing various series has been a positive for the company, though admits that the main focus when he arrived in 2016 was to move the Formula 1 team forwards. "There's a variety of benefits," Brown said in a McLaren interview when asked about the outfit contesting multiple championships. "The first remit was to get the Formula 1 team back on track, and we've had our first win in almost a decade and poles and podiums. "We're definitely not where we want to be, but I would say we're...

F1 drivers 'would not dominate' Formula E, claims Rowland

Image
Formula E racer Oliver Rowland believes that the likes of Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton would not dominate the electric series if they switched from Formula 1. Verstappen and Hamilton have claimed all but one of the Drivers' titles in Grand Prix racing since 2013, with both dominating the series in terms of race wins, podiums and pole positions in recent seasons. In 2022, Verstappen claimed a second World Championship with 15 wins, scoring 454 points to set two new all-time F1 records, while Hamilton became the first driver to score 100 wins, doing so in the '20 season, claiming a record-equalling seventh title shortly afterwards. In comparison, Formula E has only ever had one back-to-back champion in Jean-Eric Vergne, and on the eve of season nine beginning in Mexico this weekend, Mahindra driver Rowland has praised the strength of the field. ...

Formula E driver pays tribute to Jules Bianchi

Formula E racer Norman Nato will pay tribute to the late Formula 1 driver Jules Bianchi by running the number 17 next season. The number was used by Bianchi in 2014 before his tragic accident at the Japanese Grand Prix, in which he sustained serious head injuries that led to his death in 2015. Out of respect the FIA chose to retire the number from com Pet ition in F1 , but fellow French driver Nato has chose to pay tribute to Bianchi by changing his number from 71.
