F1 drivers accept imperfect qualifying solution despite pitlane shenanigans

Image
Since last season, the FIA has been making efforts to avoid dangerous scenarios of drivers coming across slow-moving cars while on flat-out qualifying laps. Various ideas have been tried out, with an attempt at the Bahrain GP to force drivers to keep to a maximum delta time at all marshalling posts having been abandoned after it proved troublesome during trials in practice. The solution used in Bahrain – there being a maximum time for a whole lap once cars are out of the pits – triggers drivers to try to find gaps in the pitlane, which can be a cause of trouble and complaints. Sometimes drivers find themselves getting blocked when coming out of their garage, or they are forced to overtake on their way down the pitlane . While such scenarios are not ideal, F1 drivers think it is much better way of doing things than risking extra danger if cars dawdle in the middle of the track at the final corners to find some clear air. Speaking about the ...

Perez praises teamwork with Verstappen in Abu Dhabi qualifying

Image
Sergio Perez has praised his teamwork with Max Verstappen during the final runs of qualifying for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The Mexican looked fast throughout the session, but a slight wobble in Q3 saw him miss out on provisional pole before then struggling to match the pace of Verstappen in the final runs. Verstappen secured pole position, while Perez will line up alongside him in second. Despite this, Perez was happy with how he and Verstappen worked together in the session. "I think I just didn't make that final step in Q3," Perez said after qualifying . "Especially Q3 run one wasn't that good, so we were a bit behind, but it's good to lock out that front row for tomorrow. "Max did a great job also for me. We worked together as a team really strongly on that final run, so [I'm] looking forward to tomorrow, which is the day that really matters." ...

Vettel was 'coming alive' in final F1 qualifying

Four-time World Champion Vettel escaped Q1 in the dying stages at Yas Marina and was able to advance through to Q3. Using only one set of new Slot tyres, Vettel's effort was quick enough for seventh, but was later shuffled down to P9, and will start alongside old rival Fernando Alonso once Daniel Ricciardo's grid penalty was applied. Wolff explains why Mercedes went 'backwards' in qualifying

Image
Toto Wolff has explained why Mercedes "went backwards " in qualifying for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix after looking stronger earlier in the weekend. The team set the pace during Friday's opening practice session, having arrived at the Yas Marina Circuit off the back of their 1-2 victory last time out in Brazil. However, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell slipped behind both Red Bull and Ferrari in Saturday's qualifying , with the pair set to line up in P5 and P6 respectively. Wolff couldn't hide his disappointment following the session, having told Sky Sports F1 : "I think that's one to put in the toilet." Wolff: We didn't get the job done Wolff feels that – as well as Ferrari appearing to make progress – the direction that the Silver Arrows took for the session may not have been the right one. "We didn't get the job done," the tea...

Ricciardo 'relieved' with performance in final qualifying for McLaren

Image
Daniel Ricciardo admits that reaching Q3 in his final qualifying with McLaren at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was "a bit of a relief". The Australian is coming to the end of his two-year tenure at the Woking-based squad following the mutual decision to terminate his multi-year contact early, meaning that he has been left without a race seat for 2023. With the F1 weekend at the Yas Marina Circuit set to be his last for the time being, Ricciardo was happy to qualify in P10, though he will drop three places due to a penalty for a collision with Kevin Magnussen last time out in Brazil. Ricciardo happy for himself and Vettel Given his struggles during 2022, Ricciardo was satisfied with his stronger performance in qualify ing at Abu Dhabi. "I won't miss my lack of competitiveness this year," he told Viaplay . "Qualifying certainly hasn't been my strong suit obvi...

Which drivers dominated their teammate in F1 2022 qualifying?

With the 2022 season concluded, we can now see which driver takes the qualifying honours for every team. As expected, there were clear victories for Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc at Red Bull and Ferrari respectively, with both taking the wins by several points. Lewis Hamilton endured a tighter contest at Mercedes, but defeated George Russell with a four-race swing. The clearest victories came at McLaren and Williams, where Lando Norris and Alex Albon came within a couple of races from completing clean sweeps against their teammates. In the tightest qualifying duel on the grid, Fernando Alonso defeated Alpine teammate Esteban Ocon 12-10. However, there are many caveats to this particular battle, such as Ocon's self-inflicted free practice crash which ruled him out of the Miami GP qualifying, and Alonso's well-documented reliability issues. What were the final results? See the full scores below: *Sebastian Vettel missed the opening two races of the sea...
