O'Ward: Ricciardo would 'love' potential IndyCar switch

Image
Pato O'Ward believes Daniel Ricciardo would "love" a switch to IndyCar should the Australian not make a return to the Formula 1 grid after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Poor performances at McLaren have led to Ricciardo's contract ending a year early, with the eight-time Grand Prix winner looking set for a return to Red Bull in a reserve driver role for 2023. Ricciardo is keen to return in 2024 should he be able to find a seat, but this is not guaranteed after he was not interested in a seat at Haas, believing he should be able to find better equipment. He has also dismissed the prospect of changing series in 2023 to keep racing, ruling out a switch to IndyCar or even Trackhouse Racing's Project 91 operation in NASCAR - of which Ricciardo is a big fan. Speaking in Abu Dhabi after his FP1 debut for the team, current McLaren IndyCar star O'Ward believes Ricciardo would be a perfect fit - and explained why ovals are not as daunting as is believed. ...

IndyCar addresses 'unacceptable' Ilott death threats

Image
IndyCar has issued a statement in the wake of death threats aimed at Callum Ilott after the Grand Prix of Long Beach. The former Ferrari junior has impressed since joining the American single-seater series last season and has been joined at Juncos by Argentinian touring car champion Agustin Canapino for the current campaign. But In Sunday's event, Ilott rejoined the race from the pits just in front of then-leader Canapino, who was off-sequence with the optimal strategy and holding up the real leaders. The Briton held onto position, as is permitted in IndyCar, but struggled for pace on cold tyres. The backlog led to frantic action, with Arrow McLaren's Pato O'Ward spinning and Canapino dropping positions. Ilott was targeted by the Argentine's fanbase post-race and revealed the extent of the abuse in a Twitter post. "Genuinely impressed by the amount of death threats and abuse I’ve received," said Ilott. "Definitely a new record by far, real...

Brown: No F1 promises made to Palou and O'Ward

Image
McLaren boss Zak Brown says he has made "no promises" to IndyCar stars Alex Palou and Pato O'Ward as they prepare for Formula 1 reserve duties. After a protracted saga in the summer of 2022, a deal was agreed so that Chip Ganassi driver Palou - the 2021 IndyCar champion - would be the official reserve driver for McLaren with O'Ward in a testing role. This is because as a champion, Palou has earned enough superlicence points while O'Ward - who actually races for McLaren in IndyCar - is still lacking the points he requires to obtain the document. Brown is confident that his driver will secure the necessary points in the upcoming season to qualify, but is firm that neither Palou or O'Ward have received any promises from him regarding an F1 future. How McLaren benefit from racing in multiple series

Image
Zak Brown has explained how he feels McLaren benefit from com Pet ing in multiple categories of motorsport. As well as having raced in Formula 1 since 1966, the team have branched out into other series over the years and now take part in five championships in total. The McLaren name is seen in F1, IndyCar, Extreme E, Esports and Formula E, a category that the squad made their debut in at the 2022/23 season-opening Mexico City E-Prix. Brown believes that pursuing various series has been a positive for the company, though admits that the main focus when he arrived in 2016 was to move the Formula 1 team forwards. "There's a variety of benefits," Brown said in a McLaren interview when asked about the outfit contesting multiple championships. "The first remit was to get the Formula 1 team back on track, and we've had our first win in almost a decade and poles and podiums. "We're definitely not where we want to be, but I would say we're...

Palou calls for FIA to 'make it easier' for IndyCar drivers to enter F1

Image
Alex Palou has called for the FIA to "make it easier" for IndyCar drivers to enter F1. It comes after Colton Herta – the youngest driver to ever win an IndyCar race - was heavily linked with an AlphaTauri seat for 2023, but his hopes were scuppered as he did not have the required super licence points needed to compete in Formula 1. Palou, meanwhile, took part in Free Practice 1 for McLaren at the 2022 United States Grand Prix, and has since been named as one of the team's reserve driver for 2023. The Spaniard has collected enough super licence points himself, having won the IndyCar championship in 2021, but believes that the process needs to be improved for others from the category who hope to break into F1. Palou: IndyCar should be given more importance "First of all, I have my super license, so I don't care what's going on! It's easy for me to s...
