Hill compares Vowles to Brawn: It's what Williams have been crying out for

Image
Damon Hill believes that James Vowles will "sort out" Williams , with the new team boss being compared to former F1 stalwart Ross Brawn. Vowles joined the Grove-based outfit ahead of the 2023 season, having previously acted as Mercedes' Motorsport Strategy Director. He worked with the Silver Arrows for 21 years, including during their previous guises as British American Racing, Honda and Brawn GP. While the team currently remain at the bottom of the Constructors' Championship, the likes of Alex Albon have spoken positively about where the squad are now compared to in the previous year. Hill – who won his 1996 World Championship with Williams – feels confident that Vowles is the right person to continue to lead the team forwards. Wolff could not stop Vowles 'reaching for the stars'

Image
Toto Wolff says he could not stop James Vowles "reaching out for the stars" following the latter's appointment as Williams Formula 1 Team Principal. It was announced on 13 January that former Mercedes strategy chief Vowles had been appointed as Williams boss, effective 20 February to replace Jost Capito who resigned in December. Vowles had spent over 20 years at Brackley through their guises as Honda, Brawn and latterly Mercedes , being a part of 17 world titles and over 120 Grand Prix victories. He had stepped up to be the de facto leader of Mercedes at races Wolff had skipped, such as Brazil in 2022, and Wolff believes it would not have been right for him to stand in Vowles' way in taking his new role. Wolff does not rule out Vowles return as Mercedes boss

Image
Toto Wolff has not ruled out the possibility of James Vowles potentially returning to Mercedes as Formula 1 Team Principal in the future. Vowles was announced last week that he was moving on from his duties at Mercedes as strategy chief to replace Jost Capito as Team Principal at Williams, who resigned in December. At Mercedes, Vowles was a trusted Wolff lieutenant who had been interested in potentially becoming a team boss in his own right. However, with Wolff firmly in place at the Brackley squad, this could not happen at Mercedes , with Vowles set to lead Williams through their latest rebuilding period. When presented with the idea that Vowles was being 'placed' at Williams to prepare him for a future Mercedes role - in a similar way to George Russell - it is something Wolff did not confirm, but also did not fully rule out as an option.
