Leclerc pinpoints three elements to Ferrari's 2022 title failure

Image
Charles Leclerc says tyre management, strategy and reliability are the three key elements to Ferrari's failure to challenge for the 2022 F1 Drivers' and Constructors' titles. After Leclerc won two of the season's first three races and established a 34- point lead at the top of the Drivers' standings, hopes were high that Ferrari could win an F1 championship title for the first time since 2008. However, a combination of factors helped Red Bull and Max Verstappen ease ahead of Leclerc and Ferrari over the course of the season, and the Monegasque noted that the Scuderia would have to improve on three key areas in 2023. Marko doubts Perez's 2023 title credentials

Image
Red Bull driver boss Helmut Marko has doubts over whether Sergio Perez has the ability to challenge Max Verstappen for the 2023 Formula 1 title . In their second season together in 2022, Verstappen dominated the campaign by claiming 15 wins, setting a new all-time season record while also hauling a record-breaking number of points. Perez meanwhile won twice - in Monaco and Singapore - and was just pipped to second place in the standings by Charles Leclerc of Ferrari in the Abu Dhabi finale. Wolff on F1's changing landscape – 'No team will win eight titles again'

Image
Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff says F1's changing landscape means a repeat of his side's recent dominance will be impossible to achieve. Mercedes won all but one available championship title between 2014 and 2021, with only Max Verstappen's narrow Drivers' title win in 2021 preventing the Silver Arrows from an eight-year clean sweep. But with F1 's recently-installed budget cap and restrictions on wind tunnel time preventing the sport's bigger teams from fully flexing their financial muscles, Wolff says a similar lengthy domination from one team is unlikely. "I think you just need to play a better game than the others," Wolff told media including TheFOXposts.Com . "It's a relative com Pet ition, and we know who our com Pet itors are today, there will be others tomorrow and after tomorrow because of the cost cap limits that have been set, and this is what the sport should be, not one team, not three, but maybe five [in title co...

How F1 plans to avoid a Verstappen Japan title quirk repeat

Image
Formula 1 are aiming to modify the regulations on shortened races, following the confusing conclusion to the Max Verstappen's title challenge. When Verstappen crossed the line at Suzuka in the rain-shortened race, it was assumed that he was not the 2022 Formula 1 World Champion. Even after Charles Leclerc copped a five-second time penalty by cutting the final chicane on that last lap and gaining an advantage that would drop him to third and promote Sergio Perez, it was still not enough. As the race had not reached 75% of its scheduled distance needed for full points to kick in following the two-hour rain delay, the expectation was that the sliding scale of reduced points would be referred to - this having been refined in the aftermath of the abandoned 2021 Belgian Grand Prix. It was believed that Verstappen would be left one point short of the total he required to seal the title and that the coronation would roll on to the United States two weeks later. However, a q...

Ex-F1 champion predicts record Verstappen title haul - 'The sky's the limit!'

1996 F1 World Champion Damon Hill says Max Verstappen can win a record eight World Championship title s. After snatching the 2021 title on the last lap of the season finale in Abu Dhabi, Verstappen retained his crown in much more dominant fashion last year, taking a record 15 wins in a single season. Having won two of 2023's first three races, and with his Red Bull RB19 appearing to be the class of the field, Verstappen looks well placed to take this season's title as well. Speaking on the F1 Nation podcast, Hill backed the Dutchman to break F1's record of seven World Championship titles, jointly held by Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton. "I'm sure he'll get better. He has shown more maturity in the application of his talents in races," said Hill. "He knows when to twist and when to stick. There's no need to go flat out everywhere but he's always got something in his back pocket if he needs it. "The sky is...

Norris 'very confident' he could challenge Verstappen for title

Image
Lando Norris is confident that he could challenge Max Verstappen for the title if he was in a position to do so. McLaren have faced a difficult start to the 2023 F1 season, with the team struggling to score points until a tumultous Australian Grand Prix allowed both Norris and Oscar Piastri to finish within the top 10. Away from the track, various changes have been made to the outfit's structure. It was confirmed in March that Technical Director James Key had left the team, and that the role has since been split into a three-headed structure of technical directors headed by Peter Prodromou, Neil Houldley and David Sanchez, with the latter set to join in January 2024. Norris acknowledges that things have not gone as well as hoped for McLaren so far in 2023, particularly after the steps forward made in previous years. Norris: McLaren performance below expectation "If I'm honest, I will say it's below the expectation," Norris told The Race . ...

Alfa Romeo to join Haas in 2024 F1 title deal

Image
Alfa Romeo are set to join Haas in a Formula 1 title deal from the 2024 season, potentially worth $20 million per annum, RacingNews365 has learnt. At the end of 2023, the Alfa title sponsorship of the Sauber team will conclude, with the Swiss name returning to the grid as they prepare for Audi's arrival in '26. However, Alfa are keen to remain involved in Grand Prix racing, and have held positive talks with Guenther Steiner's Haas outfit - whose current title sponsor Moneygram features similar colours to the Italian brand. Both teams are currently customers of Ferrari and receive components including power units from the Maranello team. RacingNews365 understands that discussions between the two parties were planned for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix but that they were instead held in Monaco after the Imola event was cancelled. Multiple sources with direct knowledge of the negotiations did not deny the rumours of potentially a two-year deal also taking in 20...

Ex-F1 driver predicts Audi title challenge

Image
Pedro de la Rosa has predicted that the future Audi F1 team will ultimately be challenging for World Championship titles. It was revealed last year that Audi would enter Formula 1 as an engine supplier to coincide with the sport’s next planned regulation change in 2026. The Four Rings subsequently announced in October that they had entered into a strategic partnership with Sauber, with the German marque set to acquire the team and turn it into Audi's factory outfit. Ahead of Audi's official takeover of Sauber – currently badged as Alfa Romeo – the firm has already hired former McLaren Team Principal Andreas Seidl as CEO, and purchased a minority stake in the Swiss-based team. Speaking on the F1 Nation podcast, de la Rosa acknowledged the current shortcomings of the Alfa Romeo-badged Sauber team, and said Audi would be willing to invest the time and effort necessary for the team to become title contenders. Aston Martin must not 'replicate' F1 rivals in title push

Image
Aston Martin must not " replicate what our com Pet itors are doing" if they want to achieve their Formula 1 title goals, says technical director Dan Fallows. The Silverstone squad finished seventh in the 2022 standings as owner Lawrence Stroll invests heavily into the team in a bid to challenge for the World Championships within the decade. As well as new facilities, including a new factory, the team have been a massive recruitment push, including signing Fallows from Red Bull - where he was a trusted Adrian Newey lieutenant - to lead the technical department. The 2023 car will be the first designed fully under Fallows' leadership, but he says the team must be confident in their own abilities to chart their own course and not just follow the example of established front-runners Mercedes, Ferrari and current champions Red Bull.
