Hamilton reveals self-inflicted limitation in Abu Dhabi practice

Image
Lewis Hamilton has revealed how a self-inflicted "limitation" cost him performance in the second Abu Dhabi Grand Prix F1 practice session. The Mercedes topped a 1-2 in the opening session, but could only manage fourth place in the second, more representative session at Yas Marina. Hamilton ended up behind Max Verstappen, George Russell and Charles Leclerc but was within half-a-second, with the long run pace looking strong. However, the seven-time World Champion believes some set-up changes he requested between the two was the reason for his slipping back down the order. Vettel: Final F1 Friday practice feels 'funny'

Sebastian Vettel had admitted he felt a bit " funny " following the final Friday of his Formula 1 career at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Four-time World Champion Vettel is retiring this weekend after a 15-year career that has brought 53 wins from 298 starts so far. He was an encouraging sixth in the opening session for Aston Martin at Yas Marina, following that up with 12th in the second session. Speaking after his 300th day of Friday practice as a driver, Vettel felt that while it was Business as usual, he did feel the significance of the moment. "It's been like many other Fridays to be honest once you pull out of the garage, you get into your rhythm and do what you know best," Vettel explained to media. "[That] is to gather a lot of information and get into the groove of the car. "It didn't take long this afternoon and this evening the track changed...

Max Verstappen set the fastest time in first practice for the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix, comfortably ahead of Lewis Hamilton. The World Champion immediately hit the Albert Park track on the Soft compound Pirelli tyres, initially posting a 1m:21.272s on his opening lap. but complained of gear-shift and braking problems in the early stages. Verstappen eventually whittled his time down to a 1m:18.790s to eclipse the fastest time from FP1 in 2022, a 1m:19.806s, ending up 0.433s clear of Hamilton. Sergio Perez was third in the second Red Bull, with McLaren's home rookie Oscar Piastri in 12th. The session was briefly red-flagged with about 20 minutes remaining of the hour's running due to a glitch with the GPS system, meaning teams were unable to inform drivers of approaching traffic, causing near misses at high speed. Logan Sargeant later stopping curtailed the session with four minutes remaining after his Williams ground to a halt. Viewed by others: ...

Should F1 free practice be reduced?

Image
Several F1 drivers have suggested that the amount of free practice time during a Grand Prix weekend could be reduced. In addition to Qualifying and the Grand Prix itself, a typical F1 race weekend also features three one-hour practice sessions, allowing drivers and teams to fine-tune their cars and run through different simulation programmes ahead of the competitive action. F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali created a stir last month by suggesting that he would prefer to eliminate all free practice sessions from a Grand Prix. Though he later clarified his comments and ruled out scrapping free practice entirely, the Italian said it would be wrong not to consider ways of changing the race weekend format in order to continue to engage the sport's growing audience. Asked about possible alterations to the running order, several drivers told media, including TheFOXposts.Com , that the amount of practice time during a weekend could be reduced. Viewed by others: ...
