Vasseur “optimistic” on Sainz F1 return ahead of decision next week

Image
If Sainz is not able to race Oliver Bearman is once again scheduled to be the Maranello team’s reserve in Melbourne, alongside his F2 duties. Sainz felt unwell in the early part of the Jeddah event and on Friday morning it was confirmed that he had appendicitis and would have to miss the race, giving Bearman a chance to make his sensational F1 debut. Sainz had an operation immediately but still managed to attend Saturday's race, albeit walking with extreme care. He flew back to Europe on Sunday. All efforts are now focused on getting him fit for the next race in Australia. “This I don't know, honestly,” said Vasseur when asked after the Jeddah race about Sainz’s potential return . “The recovery so far is amazing, the fact he was able to come today to be with the team is a very good sign, and a very good support for us. “Now, he will fly back with me tomorrow [Sunday] and he will have one week of complete rest, and we will take a decision on ...

The Australian had previously been a member of the Red Bull Junior Team since 2017, but opted to make the move to the Alpine Academy ahead of the 2022 season. Since then, Doohan – who finished P6 in this year's Formula 2 championship, in which he competed for the Virtuosi Racing squad – has been given two Free Practice 1 drives for the Alpine F1 team, as well as getting behind the wheel at the Abu Dhabi post-season test. As such, the 19-year-old feels that he made the right decision in switching teams. Herbert in the dark on why Sky made 'disappointing' decision to axe him

Image
Johnny Herbert says he does not know why Sky elected to make the " disappointing " decision to axe him from their F1 channel. The former F1 driver-turned pundit revealed that he would not be part of their coverage earlier this year, after being involved since Sky Sports took over the live coverage rights for all the races from BBC in the UK in 2012. Paul Di Resta was also taken off the coverage, after presenting with the team since the 2016 season. Herbert said it was not his decision to step away and that he was told in December that he would not be on the channel without any explanation. "I didn't decide to step away – I thought everything was going ahead!" he said to Mirror Sport . "And then I got a call in December, I think it was, when I was told things were changing. "It wasn't explained why or what was changing. There was a mention of social media stuff and that was about it, really. I don't really know." ...

Alpine double down on 2022 power unit 'risk' decision

Image
Alpine's Matt Harman says the team would repeat their Formula 1 power unit "risk" in 2022 given the com Pet itive edge it has given them ahead of the '23 season. Power unit suppliers are now banned from bringing performance-focused upgrades to their designs, with them being frozen until the 2026 power unit rule changes. However, manufacturers are allowed to bring reliability upgrades, meaning Renault - who supply Alpine - opted for performance-oriented development path ahead of the 2022 season. While both Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon were presented with a more powerful engine, it also proved unreliable with Alonso expressing his frustration on a number of occasions following costly DNFs. In the end, Alpine finished fourth in the Constructors' Championship, with Technical Director Harman believing that the risk taken to prioritise performance and worry about reliability later has proved correct. ...
