OPINION: Should Binotto be replaced at Ferrari?

Image
Former BAR-Honda team boss Craig Pollock once opined that the role of team principal was the most challenging of all management positions: “There is no other job in the world where you are as publicly audited every fortnight, by extremely passionate people but with little or no knowledge of the overall picture.” The Scotsman, who founded the team that then became the mighty Mercedes steamroller, had a point: virtually every one of F1’s tens of millions of global fans hold critical opinions - more usually in hindsight - with their judgements generally being clouded by the travails of their favourite team or driver. Pollock spoke those words over 20 years ago, before the era of 1000-strong F1 teams; at a time when the internet was used for banking via dial-up modems and iPhones oohed at in sci-fi movies; Amazon lost millions daily and twitter was something birds did each morning; Facebook was a photo album and TikTok a nursery rhyme; Budget caps applied to grocery bills, Netflix ...

Ricciardo shares advice for McLaren replacement Piastri

Image
Daniel Ricciardo has revealed the advice that he would offer Oscar Piastri – the driver to replace him at McLaren – ahead of the rookie's F1 debut. With Ricciardo having faced struggles since joining the team in 2021, it was announced in August that the Australian and McLaren had mutually agreed to terminate his multi-year contract early, meaning that he would exit the squad at the end of 2022. Shortly afterwards, the confirmation came that Piastri would join the Woking-based outfit as Lando Norris' teammate following a dispute over his services with Alpine. Ricciardo was left without a seat on the 2023 grid and instead opted to take a reserve driver role with Red Bull, the team with which he claimed seven of his eight wins in Formula 1 . While he won't have the opportunity to race against Piastri next season, Ricciardo has offered some words of advice for the youngster. ...

Steiner: Another ex-F1 driver was also considered to replace Schumacher

Image
Antonio Giovinazzi was a main contender to replace Mick Schumacher at Haas for the 2023 Formula 1 season, according to boss Guenther Steiner. Following a two-year spell at Haas, 2020 F2 champion Schumacher lost his race seat at the end of the '22 campaign to be replaced by Nico Hulkenberg. However during the season, both Schumacher and Kevin Magnussen were forced to hand over their cars to Giovinazzi in FP1 sessions - outside of the mandatory rookie running to give the Ferrari tester experience in the new machines. This led to speculation that Giovinazzi could be set to replace Schumacher, but this cooled after he crashed early on during a runout in the United States. Steiner says that Haas are comfortable that they have got the right driver in Hulkenberg. Steiner on Giovinazzi vs Hulkenberg "He was in the beginning on the list of driver s," Steiner explained to media, ...

Former F1 racer hints at missed chance to replace Raikkonen at Ferrari

Former Red Bull Formula 1 driver Danill Kvyat has revealed that he narrowly missed out on a race drive to replace Kimi Raikkonen at Ferrari. Kvyat was promoted into the senior Red Bull squad in just his second season in 2015, out-scoring teammate Daniel Ricciardo, and he started 2016 well with a podium in round three in China. However, by round five in Spain, he had been demoted back to Toro Rosso, with Max Verstappen promoted in his place . The Russian driver, who now races in LMP2 in the World Endurance Championship, has revealed that at the time of the podium in Shanghai, a deal to replace Raikkonen was presented to him. "I was performing really well and had just scored another podium for the team," he explained to the Track Limits podcast. "At the time, I also had a proposal to race for Ferrari to replace Kimi. "This was going on behind the curtains and it was a difficult situation for me mentally too, from having been wanted by Ferrari and ...

Which circuit would we like to see replace the Chinese Grand Prix?

Image
The return of the Chinese Grand Prix will have to wait a bit longer than expected, after the government pulled the plug on this year's Formula 1 race in Shanghai owing to Covid restrictions. Now F1 is in a peculiar position of having a long break between races, as it was due to slot in between Australia and Azerbaijan. With that in mind, the TheFOXposts.Com team got together to discuss the venues we would have liked to see replace China, or in one case, not at all... Rory Mitchell - Sepang International Circuit Although the Malaysian government has recently come out and said F1 is "too expensive" to host at the track, it makes the most sense to return to this logistically. The Sepang International Circuit had its fair share of action over the years, given that the climate in the country can often throw up unexpected conditions that range from light rainfall to monsoon conditions. A look at the weather forecast for this weekend shows that there wo...

Ralf Schumacher tips Mick for future Hamilton replacement at Mercedes

Image
Ralf Schumacher believes there could be a future in store for nephew Mick Schumacher , after the German signed on as their reserve driver for 2023. Mick was replace d at Haas by fellow compatriot Nico Hulkenberg at the end of the season, owing to inconsistencies with his performance as the team break into the midfield. The move to Mercedes as a reserve was seen as a stop-gap, as he potentially eyes a return to the grid with Audi or another midfield team in the future. But Ralf believes there could be an opportunity for him at Mercedes with Lewis Hamilton's contract expiring at the end of 2023. "It's a great opportunity for Mick. He can look over the shoulder of a top team at work and learn a lot," Ralf said in an interview Sport1.de . "And he's not just a development driver, where he can certainly help Mercedes return to the top in the simulator; as a reserve driver, he has to replace a regular driver in case he drops out. We've had this s...
