Verstappen storms to pole position ahead of Perez in Abu Dhabi qualifying

Max Verstappen will start the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix from the front of the pack after claiming pole position in the final qualifying session of the year. Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez secured P2, ahead of Charles Leclerc in third, while Carlos Sainz will line up in fourth. Lewis Hamilton clinched fifth, with George Russell in sixth and Lando Norris seventh. Esteban Ocon, Sebastian Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo complete the top 10. Perez narrowly missed out on provisional pole at the end of the first runs following a slight wobble, while Verstappen posted the fastest time ahead of Sainz. Vettel completed just one flying lap in the session for his final F1 qualifying before his impending retirement. Perez: Red Bull in 'very unique position' to have Ricciardo

Sergio Perez believes that Red Bull are in a "very unique position " following Daniel Ricciardo 's return. After being left without a race seat in 2023 following his exit from McLaren, Ricciardo opted to become a reserve driver for the Milton Keynes-based squad, having previously raced for the team between 2014 and 2018. Ricciardo made his first F1 race weekend appearance of the year at the Australian Grand Prix and – whilst he didn't get behind the wheel – was a visible presence in the Red Bull garage throughout the event. The impact of the Australian's return has been praised by team boss Christian Horner, who suggested that it was a boost to have Ricciardo's "positive energy" around, and Perez has voiced a similar opinion.
