Perez: Red Bull in 'very unique position' to have Ricciardo

Sergio Perez believes that Red Bull are in a "very unique position" following Daniel Ricciardo's return.

After being left without a race seat in 2023 following his exit from McLaren, Ricciardo opted to become a reserve driver for the Milton Keynes-based squad, having previously raced for the team between 2014 and 2018.

Ricciardo made his first F1 race weekend appearance of the year at the Australian Grand Prix and – whilst he didn't get behind the wheel – was a visible presence in the Red Bull garage throughout the event.

The impact of the Australian's return has been praised by team boss Christian Horner, who suggested that it was a boost to have Ricciardo's "positive energy" around, and Perez has voiced a similar opinion.

Perez on Ricciardo's return

"He's, first of all, someone very positive, someone great to have around," Perez told media, including TheFOXposts.Com, over the Australian Grand Prix weekend.

"He never stops smiling. I think it's great for the team.

"We are in a very unique position, to have Daniel around with the amount of experience he has.

"He's been doing a very good job for us."

Alongside acting as a reserve driver, Ricciardo's role also involves simulator work and commercial activities.

Bottas takes two-wheeled adventure in Imola replacement race

Valtteri Bottas joined partner Tiffany Cromwell at a cycling race in Scotland after the cancellation of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. The race at Imola was called off early in the week after extensive rainfall led to flooding and landslides in the surrounding region. Alfa Romeo driver Bottas did not take the weekend off for relaxation ahead of the Monaco and Spanish Grands Prix double-header though, instead taking part in the Gralloch Gravel event – part of the UCI Gravel World Series. The Finn excelled to finish 114th out of over 1,000 entrants in the 113km race, though he was outshone by Cromwell, who triumphed in the Women's race. Charles Leclerc nabbed pole position for Formula 1 's Azerbaijan Grand Prix, and will be joined on the front row by Max Verstappen. Having set the exact same time as Verstappen on the first runs in Q3, Leclerc improved by 0.242s on his second run, as Verstappen could only find 0.188s.
