Video: Mercedes 'punish' de Vries for switching to Red Bull family

Nyck de Vries has been given a send-off to remember by Mercedes as he prepares to join Red Bull's sister team AlphaTauri in 2023. The Dutchman had held the role of reserve driver for the Silver Arrows but, after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, his duties officially came to an end, with the Dutchman set to test for his new squad at post-season testing during the week ahead. As such, he said goodbye to Mercedes following the race at the Yas Marina Circuit and in the process experienced one of the team's traditions – those who leave are 'dumped' in the marina. Later, de Vries was tied to a trolley usually reserved for storing tyres and taken to AlphaTauri by the Silver Arrows' crew. Watch footage of de Vries' memorable send-off below! The Frenchmen said he "understands" why Alpine finished as the best of the 'midfield' runners in 2022 and believed that he could spot the 'strengths' of the A522. Szafnauer calls for rules change amid Gasly threat

Image
Otmar Szafnauer has called on Formula 1 bosses to make adjustments to the penalty points system as his new driver Pierre Gasly is threatened by a ban. Gasly – who switches from AlphaTauri to Alpine for 2023 – racked up 10 penalty points on his superlicence in 2022, with 12 the threshold to trigger a one-race ban. No driver has yet to reach 12 points, but Gasly's next set of points are due to be wiped on 22 May 2023 after the Spanish Grand Prix, in nine races' time. Faced with the prospect of a ban, the Frenchman has called the situation "embarrassing", and his new team boss feels that a change is required on the account of more races being on the calendar. Before he leaves the outfit, Gasly joined Verstappen, Sergio Perez and Yuki Tsunoda at the Honda Racing Thanks Day in Japan, where all of the drivers paid tribute to the 26-year-old. This included a speech by Verstappen, who hailed Gasly as an "amazing driver". Verstappen shares praise for Gasly "Pierre, we go way back," Verstappen told Gasly in front of fans at the Motegi circuit. Gasly has no regrets over Red Bull career: I'm stronger than I was

Image
Pierre Gasly insists that he has no regrets over his time with the Red Bull stable ahead of his impending switch to Alpine for 2023. The Frenchman first arrived in the sport back in 2017 with the then-called Toro Rosso outfit before being promoted to the main Red Bull team for the 2019 F1 season. However, midway through the campaign, Gasly was demoted back down to Toro Rosso after struggling to match the pace of teammate Max Verstappen. He went on to rebuild at the squad – now known as AlphaTauri – and claimed his debut Formula 1 victory at the 2020 Italian Grand Prix. Gasly's long stint with the Red Bull family is now coming to a close and, despite the ups and downs, he admits that he wouldn't change anything about the experience. Gasly: I'm a much stronger driver than I was When asked if his exit from the outfit sparked any feelings of not having had the chances he des...

Gasly explains inherent problem for AlphaTauri throughout 2022

Image
AlphaTauri finished the 2021 Formula 1 season in sixth, but in the year of a radical new regulation change the team has dropped down to ninth. The new regulations were designed to help bring the teams closer on track, with the Italian team hoping for an improvement. However it turned out to be a mediocre finish for AlphaTauri , as they struggled to keep up with the rate of development of others according to Pierre Gasly . "We had high expectations after the previous season and the momentum was there," Gasly told the media, including TheFOXposts.Com . "The new regulations were supposed to bring the field closer together, so my hopes for AlphaTauri 's best year have never been higher than at the start of the season. "We weren't in shape at the beginning of the year, but I wasn't worried then. It was going to be a development battle, but that didn't work out for us." ...

Tsunoda: I don't care about team leader role

Image
Yuki Tsunoda says he is not concerned by any team leader status at AlphaTauri in 2023, following the arrival of Nyck de Vries . Next year the Japanese driver will enter his third full season in Formula 1, and his first season as the more experienced driver at a team. Having raced against Pierre Gasly in his first two seasons, Tsunoda has generally served in a supporting role to the Frenchman, who has accumulated more points in their time together. With Gasly moving to Alpine for 2023, AlphaTauri have signed Nyck de Vries , who impressed in his F1 debut at Williams at the Italian GP. Despite Tsunoda being more experienced than de Vries, the Dutchman is around five years older and has spent a couple of years driving different F1 cars, raising questions about which driver will become the 'team leader'. When asked about his status for next season, Tsunoda responded by placing more importance on being the quicker driver and attaining 'number one' status th...

Gasly talks up AlphaTauri: Next year they'll fight at the front!

Image
Outgoing AlphaTauri driver Pierre Gasly says his now-former team are confident of being able to fight at the front of the grid in 2023. Gasly left the Red Bull sister squad for Alpine at the end of the 2022 season after two spells of almost five seasons with the team formerly known as Toro Rosso. The Frenchman is both the longest-serving and most successful driver to have been with AlphaTauri , taking a fairy-tale maiden Grand Prix win at Monza in 2020, and regularly finishing in the upper points positions across his stints with the Faenza outfit. After having finished sixth in the 2021 Constructors' Championship, AlphaTauri slipped back to ninth in 2022, with Gasly's fifth place in Baku the highlight of an otherwise lean year. However, the Frenchman said his now-former colleagues were bullish on a return to form in 2023. "[AlphaTauri] told me that next year their car will be the best they have ever made, and that they will fight at the front," Gasl...

Why Verstappen was happy not to start F1 career at Red Bull

Image
Max Verstappen admits he was glad to start his F1 career with the Toro Rosso team in order to build up experience before joining the main Red Bull squad. There will be several new faces on the grid in 2023, as Logan Sargeant, Oscar Piastri and Nyck de Vries step up to Williams, McLaren and AlphaTauri respectively. While Verstappen is only 25 years old – younger than the 27-year-old de Vries – the two-time World Champion is now one of F1's more experienced drivers, having first made his debut as a rookie back in 2015. As such, the Dutchman has offered some words of advice for Sargeant, as well as the other drivers entering the sport for the first time. Verstappen glad to start at Toro Rosso "Enjoy it," Verstappen told US broadcaster NBC . "He's in a team where he's not going to fight for wins, but it's maybe good because, in the first year, you don't ...

De Vries responds to Tost's brutal 'no trust' comments

Image
Nyck de Vries has responded to the comments made by AlphaTauri team boss Franz Tost, who claimed that he no longer had trust in his engineers after a poor start to their season. AlphaTauri are yet to score points so far in 2023, with Yuki Tsunoda coming close in Saudi Arabia before getting overtaken by Kevin Magnussen in the closing stages of the race. Tost had criticised the engineers of the AT04 earlier in the weekend, claiming that the severe lack of downforce is what is stopping them from progressing further up the field. De Vries claims he felt no change in atmosphere within the team after Tost made the comments . "I honestly think the vibe within the team is great and I felt no difference post certain comments that have been made," said De Vries. "I think things can be taken a little bit out of context and we were all kind of scratching our heads. We all want to be as quick as Red Bull that is currently winning and dominating." View...

Why F1 drivers were left 'blindfolded' before FP1 red flag

Image
If you ride onboard with any driver on the F1 TV app, you'll often hear engineers acting as 'spotters' as they tell them the gap to other cars on track. This is to ensure they can build up enough space before a lap so they do not encounter traffic, while also staying out of the way of drivers who are on a hot lap as the closing speeds can be quite fast. When FP1 in Melbourne was red flagged due to an issue with the GPS tracker, teams and drivers were effectively in the dark. What ensured was chaos as those on a hot lap encountered traffic, with Zhou Guanyu having to thread his way through a slow-moving Red Bull and Aston Martin at the penultimate corner. "Seemed like everyone was blindfolded once that GPS system went out," said Kevin Magnussen to media, including TheFOXposts.Com . "We know that we are relying on our engineers to tell us where the traffic is and I don't think everyone knew that the GPS system was out. "So when you don...

Tost in Vettel-de Vries comparison: Crashes must happen

He has already cultivated a strong career in motorsports, impressing in sportscar racing as well as becoming champion in F2 and World Champion in Formula E with Mercedes. Tsunoda hopes 'big updates' for Imola can get AlphaTauri back on track

Image
Yuki Tsunoda is hoping that "big updates " planned for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix will get AlphaTauri back on track , after a disappointing start to the season. The AlphaTauri driver qualified in P17 but managed to recover to P11 in Miami after pulling off moves in the opening stages of the race, notably running side-by-side with Zhou Guanyu at the Turn 14 chicane before using his straight-line speed to get past at Turn 17. "It's kind of a trend of AlphaTauri, sometimes when the qualifying is bad the race is good. So obviously we have to find out why we are good, but it's really pretty surprising," he told media, including TheFOXposts.Com . "It's good that I'm able to definitely extract the performance every race – more than last year." Viewed by others: Analysis AlphaTauri ...
