How F1 plans to ban tyre blankets for 2024

Image
One of the big changes on the Formula 1 horizon is regarding tyre blankets, and the push from the FIA and Pirelli to ban them for 2024. The phasing out of tyre blankets is underway, but this has received pushback from the teams and drivers over safety concerns. The driver's fears are centred around the use of cold tyres, which will increase the driving challenge in the opening laps after a pit stop. Max Verstappen predicted that there would be "a lot of crashes" should the move go ahead, but extensive tests are planned for 2023 in an attempt to work towards the abandonment of tyre blankets for the '24 season. The pros and cons of getting rid of tyre blankets According to TheFOXposts.Com 's sources on the F1 Commission, consigning tyre blankets to the history books could have a strong environmental impact by saving huge amounts of energy. The expectation is that ...

Ferrari and Mercedes among teams to take part in extra tests in off-season

Image
Pirelli is completing extensive tests in the run up to the 2023 Formula 1 season, with the help of seven of the 10 teams on the grid. The Italian tyre-maker previously completed milage with all the teams at the Abu Dhabi post- season test with all the dry tyres, including a new 'C1' compound set to be introduced in 2023. Last weekend Alfa Romeo completed laps at Paul Ricard testing both the Intermediate and Rain tyres, while Ferrari is completing wet tyre tests on Tuesday and Wednesday at Marinello with Carlos Sainz taking to the wheel today. AlphaTauri will complete a test later this month at Portimao, testing the dry weather compound tyres. How strategy will be key in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Image
There are three possible strategies that can be used to win the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, all of which involve a one-stop strategy. As shown in the Sprint race on Saturday, tyre graining is a big issue for the teams to contend with on the softer compound tyres. Those who started on the Soft found themselves towards the back of the field at the finish, so it is likely that the Medium tyre will be used most along with the Hard. F1 tyre supplier Pirelli say the fastest strategy is to start on the Medium tyre before switching to the Hard tyres between Laps 13 and 20. An alternative would be to start on the Hard tyre and switch to the Soft between Laps 38 and 45. It is possible to go on a two-stop strategy, which is slower on paper but could yield results if there is a stoppage. The first option is to start on the Medium, then a swap to the Hard between Laps 8 to 16, then another set of Hards between Laps 27 to 35. It is possible to start on the Medium and switch to the Medi...

Pirelli confirm vital tyre changes starting from British GP

Image
Pirelli have confirmed plans to introduce new Formula 1 tyres from the British Grand Prix onwards, as was exclusively revealed by RacingNews365 yesterday. F1 's sole tyre supplier has elected to introduce new specification tyres as performance loads seen thus far in 2023 have exceeded the projections teams sent to Pirelli . Circuits such as Silverstone, Spa, Zandvoort and Suzuka feature some of the highest tyre loads throughout the season, and with all set to host Grands Prix in the second half of the season, the change will come into force from the July 7th-9th weekend. As reported by RacingNews365 , the new spec of tyre will introduce the planned 2024 materials, with performance loads expected to continue to exceed expectations throughout the 2023 campaign. The new tyres will be tested by all teams during Friday practice at the upcoming Spanish Grand Prix. Pirelli sought approval from the FIA to make the change s, with the request under Article 10.8.3 of the techn...

Pirelli go aggressive with Baku and Imola compounds

Image
Pirelli has elected to bring the Soft C5 compound to the upcoming Formula 1 races in Baku and Imola. It is the first time the tyre maker has brought the C5 in 2023, mainly due to the tight corners at the Baku city circuit and long straights where cars reach up to 340kph. Pirelli expects thermal degradation to become a factor due to the high asphalt temperature at Azerbaijan. This is also the case for Imola when F1 is set to trial a new qualifying format with just one compound used in each session. This "Alternative Tyre Allocation" reduces the total tyre allocation for each car from 13 sets to 11 per weekend. Pirelli will keep the same C4, C3, and C2 allocation for the Miami Grand Prix used at the Saudi Arabian and Australian Grands Prix.
