Ferrari and Mercedes among teams to take part in extra off-season tests

Pirelli is completing extensive tests in the run up to the 2023 Formula 1 season, with the help of seven of the 10 teams on the grid.

The Italian tyre-maker previously completed milage with all the teams at the Abu Dhabi post-season test with all the dry tyres, including a new 'C1' compound set to be introduced in 2023.

Last weekend Alfa Romeo completed laps at Paul Ricard testing both the Intermediate and Rain tyres, while Ferrari is completing wet tyre tests on Tuesday and Wednesday at Marinello with Carlos Sainz taking to the wheel today.

AlphaTauri will complete a test later this month at Portimao, testing the dry weather compound tyres.

Further tests planned in winter break

Three more tests will be held between February 7th and 8th in Jerez, with Mercedes set to do some dry tyre running at Paul Ricard for two days along with Aston Martin.

This will be followed by AlphaTauri, who will be testing rain and Intermediates tyres for Pirelli before the start of pre-season testing.

Niether Red Bull, McLaren, Alpine, Haas, or Williams will take part in the test days, with Pirelli engineer Simone Berra confirming they had been contacted by the supplier but received no response.

Aston Martin dismiss concerns over impact of break in calendar

Aston Martin boss Mike Krack has dismissed any concerns over the recent four-week gap in the F1 calendar having an impact on the team's momentum. The squad had a strong start to the 2023 season, with Fernando Alonso claiming three consecutive podium results in the opening races. Lance Stroll, meanwhile, bounced back from a pre-season cycling accident to finish in the points in Bahrain and Australia, putting the team in P2 of the Constructors' Championship. Hamilton leads Russell to top Abu Dhabi FP1 as rookies return to action

Lewis Hamilton set the pace during Free Practice 1 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in a session featuring several rookie drivers. Hamilton hit the top of the timesheets with a lap of 1:26.633 on the Soft tyre, while Mercedes teammate George Russell was two tenths of a second back in P2. Charles Leclerc claimed third, ahead of Sergio Perez in fourth. Liam Lawson – at the wheel of Max Verstappen's Red Bull – took P5, and Sebastian Vettel rounded out the top six in his final F1 weekend ahead of retirement.
