Schumacher open to F1 reserve role after 'disappointing' Haas exit

Image
Mick Schumacher has suggested that he would be open to taking a reserve role in Formula 1 next year, following his exit from the Haas team. The 23-year-old will not be retained at the American team for next season, having been replaced by Nico Hulkenberg. Schumacher had struggled to match teammate Kevin Magnussen's form in 2022, with the Dane drafted back in as a last-minute replacement for Nikita Mazepin at the start of the season. When asked for his reaction to the news, Schumacher believed that he had improved over the year, and suggested that he should have been afforded more time after a "tough" 2021 debut season. "Obviously, it's disap point ing in some ways because I feel like I've been doing a good job up to this point ," Schumacher told media, including TheFOXposts.Com . "On the other hand, the team decided to go that way, so I have to respect that. I'm focused on the future. "We've had our ups and downs for ...

Why Doohan is reluctant to take F1 reserve driver role

Image
Jack Doohan admits that he is reluctant to take a reserve driver role in Formula 1 just yet after missing out on a possible race seat for 2023. The Alpine Academy driver has previously spoken of his attempts to be considered for the spot in the team that became available when Fernando Alonso announced his departure for Aston Martin. This position later went to Pierre Gasly, while Doohan looks set to remain in Formula 2 after finishing the 2022 championship in sixth place. The Australian is keen to focus on racing going forwards, rather than taking on a reserve role in F1. "There's possibilities of what I could be enrolled into the Formula 1 team but, honestly, being a reserve driver or not doesn't help me or doesn't do anything really for me," Doohan told media, including TheFOXposts.Com , after taking part in the Abu Dhabi post-season test for Alpine. "The main priority is to focus fully on Formula 2, because I could come around to all the...

Wolff praises Schumacher approach as he becomes Mercedes F1 reserve

Image
Toto Wolff has identified Mick Schumacher's "calm and methodical" approach to Formula 1 as a key strength as he joins Mercedes as a third driver. Schumacher lost his seat at Haas just before the end of the 2022 season, and with no other race seat options available in F1 for '23, was forced into looking for a reserve slot. Wolff was open to the idea of Schumacher coming aboard to shadow Lewis Hamilton and George Russell, but said it depended on what the German and his management wanted to do. It was announced shortly before the Mercedes confirmation that Schumacher would be leaving the Ferrari Driver Academy after four seasons, freeing him to sign with the Brackley squad - where his father Michael raced between 2010 and 2012. Drugovich rues missed F1 chance ahead of reserve programme

Image
Formula 2 champion Felipe Drugovich has admitted his frustration at missing out on a Formula 1 race seat in 2023 as he embarks on a reserve programme. MP Motorsport racer Drugovich dominated the F2 season, claiming five wins and hauling 265 points, 101 ahead of runner-up Theo Pourchaire. However, despite his success, the Brazilian was unable to secure a promotion to Formula 1 - the second successive F2 champion to be in that position following Oscar Piastri's 2021 title win. Unlike Piastri, Drugovich was not part of any F1 junior squad, but did sign with Aston Martin after wrapping up his title. He made his first F1 appearance in first practice at the Abu Dhabi GP with more outings planned for 2023 - and although a race programme in another series has not been agreed, Drugovich has previously spoken of his desire for something to be arranged.
