Full weekend schedule for the F1 2022 Abu Dhabi GP

Just days after racing in Brazil, F1 returns to action this weekend as the 2022 season concludes with the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. While the 2021 event played host to the controversial title showdown between Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, both championships have long been sealed by Verstappen and Red Bull ahead of this year's event. However, there is still plenty to play for. Sergio Perez and Charles Leclerc are tied on points as they battle for P2 in the World Championship. Elsewhere, Mercedes have closed the gap to second-placed Ferrari in the Constructors' standings, with 19 points separating them. Can the Silver Arrows repeat their Brazilian Grand Prix success to take the spot? The weekend will follow the usual format, with two practice sessions taking place on Friday. FP1 is schedule d for 10:00 UK time, with FP2 following at 13:00. On Saturday, FP3 will be held at 10:30 UK time, ahead of qualifying at 14:00. This will determine the grid for Sunday...

Sainz: Silverstone win not my best weekend of 2022

Image
Carlos Sainz believes his third-place finish in Brazil, and not his maiden Formula 1 victory in Britain, was his best drive of the 2022 season. The Ferrari driver captured a first F1 Pole Position in wet conditions to start P1 for the British Grand Prix, and eventually claimed the win in his 150th start after ignoring team orders after a strategy blunder for teammate Charles Leclerc. In what at times was a trying season for the Spanish driver, he eventually went onto finish a career-best fifth in the Drivers' Championship, relegating Lewis Hamilton to sixth in Abu Dhabi for the Mercedes driver's career-worst season result. Reflecting upon the season, Sainz highlighted two weekend s which he felt were superior to the Silverstone win - including one where he retired on the first lap. Silverstone not Sainz's best win "It is the win of course," replied Sainz when as...

Ferrari identify 'important step' despite disappointing weekend

Image
Ferrari boss Frederic Vasseur has identified an "important step" that the team made at the Australian Grand Prix, despite coming away with no points. After Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc lined up in P5 and P7 respectively on the starting grid, Leclerc found himself out of the running by the end of the first lap after contact with Lance Stroll into Turn 3 sent the Ferrari spinning off into the gravel trap. Sainz spent much of the event running in the points before colliding with Fernando Alonso at the penultimate race restart on Lap 57. The Spaniard was hit with a five-second time penalty, pushing him down to P12 in the final order. Despite this, Vasseur believes that there is a key positive for Ferrari to take away from the weekend in Melbourne. Vasseur praises 'good recovery' for Ferrari "On the performance side, I think we had a good recovery compared to Jeddah," Vasseur told British broadcaster Channel 4 . "We [had] a ...

Alpine to stockpile car parts before Baku Sprint weekend

Image
Alpine have stocked up on spare parts ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix Sprint race weekend, according to team boss Otmar Szafnauer. F1 is currently on a four-week gap between Melbourne and Baku, after the cancellation of the Chinese Grand Prix. Confirmation that the race would not be replaced came prior to the season, and now Alpine are using the extra time to produce spare parts ahead of the first Sprint weekend of 2023. "Well, the break wasn't planned but it is a welcome break from both getting ample car parts, spares as well as when we do bring developments," Szafnauer told media, including TheFOXposts.Com . "You know there’s a huge effort to make enough of those parts to ensure that you can really push hard – so that definitely helps." The team suffered a double blow at the end of the Australian GP, when Pierre Gasly collided with teammate Esteban Ocon, resulting in significant damage to both cars. Viewed by others: ...

Schumacher 'shocked' during first race weekend at Mercedes

Image
Mick Schumacher has admitted that one aspect of his first race weekend with Mercedes left him " shock ed". The German joined the Silver Arrows as a reserve driver for 2023 after being left without a seat on the grid following his departure from Haas. While he may not be racing, Schumacher feels that he has already learned a lot in his new role. In a 'diary' shared by Mercedes, Schumacher reflected: "Since I joined Mercedes, I've been settling in great. "Everybody is just so open-minded towards me, and that made me feel welcome from the first moment I stepped into the factory in Brackley. I've spent a lot of time there in these first months. It's a very impressive facility." Simulator work One of the main features of Schumacher's position so far has been working in the simulator, a facility that he says has developed a lot since he visited the factory several years ago. "I visited it back in 2014 as a youn...

McLaren prepared for 'risk' posed by Baku weekend

Image
McLaren boss Andrea Stella is confident that the team have prepared for the "risk" posed by the upcoming Sprint race at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The Sprint will make its first of six appearances during the weekend in Baku, which will also see the introduction of a Sprint Shootout in place of Free Practice 2. This will determine the starting order for the Sprint, while Friday's qualifying will set the grid for Sunday's main race. While McLaren have had mixed fortunes in the opening races of the 2023 season, both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri scored points last time out in Australia, and Stella feels that the squad are in a positive frame of the mind for the Azerbaijan event. McLaren prepared for 'risk' in Baku "We come to Baku following a solid result in Australia, a short period away from track to refocus and with good spirits in the team so we're ready to go again for the first double-header of the season," Ste...

Alpine confession after Azerbaijan weekend 'snowballed out of control'

Image
Alpine Sporting Director Alan Permane has conceded the team "didn't do a good enough job" after a nightmare Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend . The event got off to the worst possible start for the squad, with Pierre Gasly's A523 catching fire within the first 15 minutes of the only practice session during the alternative Sprint format, whilst teammate Esteban Ocon was also confined to the garage with concerns focused around the rear of his car. Gasly went on to crash out of qualifying later in the day, although Ocon made the best of a bad situation to reach Q2. But the pace was never present for the French manufacturer and the team failed to pick up points in either the Sprint or Grand Prix. Hamilton, Russell lead calls for F1 weekend format changes

Image
Lewis Hamilton and George Russell are leading calls for a Formula 1 weekend format change , following the comments made by CEO Stefano Domenicali on the future of practice sessions. Discussions are currently taking place about how practice sessions can be made to be more engaging, with the potential for rewards or points being on the table. Hamilton believes F1 should be more 'dynamic' with race weekends and look at specific solutions for certain races such as Monaco, which can often not live up to their hype when it comes to race day. "I think we can be more dynamic and I think we can look at places like Monaco, perhaps there is a different kind of solution for that weekend to make it more engaging for fans," he told media, including TheFOXposts.Com . "We use the sprint races in some places and maybe there's something else we do. "I like the format on the sprint weekend where you have that one practice session, and there's a lot ...

Verstappen pinpoints worst weekend from title-winning 2022

Image
Max Verstappen has highlighted the Singapore Grand Prix weekend as the worst in his all-conquering second Formula 1 championship winning season. Verstappen crushed the field in 2022, claiming 15 wins from 22 races plus victory in two of the three Sprint events to host new records for most wins and points in a single season, respectively. Following a second place finish in Austria, Verstappen would go onto win nine of the remaining 11 races of the season, with Singapore and Brazil the two he did not after various incidents in both. While Red Bull admitted to set-up mistakes at Interlagos, errors in Singapore cost Verstappen throughout the weekend.
