Verstappen pinpoints worst weekend from title-winning 2022

Max Verstappen has highlighted the Singapore Grand Prix weekend as the worst in his all-conquering second Formula 1 championship winning season.

Verstappen crushed the field in 2022, claiming 15 wins from 22 races plus victory in two of the three Sprint events to host new records for most wins and points in a single season, respectively.

Following a second place finish in Austria, Verstappen would go onto win nine of the remaining 11 races of the season, with Singapore and Brazil the two he did not after various incidents in both.

While Red Bull admitted to set-up mistakes at Interlagos, errors in Singapore cost Verstappen throughout the weekend.

Verstappen explains Singapore struggles

"There was Monaco and Silverstone, but I would go for Singapore - that was just a terrible weekend," Verstappen explained to Viaplay when asked about his worst race of the season.

"Everything went wrong in setting the car up on Friday, we had way too many issues to actually try and run the car.

"Then of course we didn't have enough fuel in qualifying, and then everything went wrong in the race as well. It was just [one of them weekends] that happens."

Verstappen was forced to abandon his final qualifying lap after a wet qualifying in Singapore due to a lack of fuel available in the car.

Cars must supply a 1 litre sample to the FIA for testing, with exclusion from the results the penalty if this cannot be obtained as Red Bull felt an angry Verstappen and eighth on the grid was better than a P20 start.

On race day, Verstappen suffered a heavy lock up after a safety car period, requiring a fresh set of tyres.

He would catch and pass Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel to claim seventh - a position he finished more often (twice) in the season than second (once).
