Vettel focused on Aston Martin challenge and not retirement

Image
Sebastian Vettel is not focused on his impending Formula 1 retirement as Aston Martin still face a challenge in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Vettel will start his 299th and final Grand Prix from ninth on the grid after a strong qualifying session at Yas Marina, with Aston currently seventh in the Constructors' standings. They are just five points behind Alfa Romeo in the race for sixth place, and with both Aston's ahead of the Alfa duo on the grid, Vettel is keen to go out strongly and deliver the higher position for the team. Bottas proud after Alfa Romeo 'sacrifice' Abu Dhabi GP for championship

Image
Valtteri Bottas has praised Alfa Romeo after the team sacrifice d their own results in Abu Dhabi to focus on preventing Aston Martin from beating them in the Constructors' Championship. With Alfa only four points ahead of Aston going into the weekend, the squad opted to try to make life difficult for their rivals at the Yas Marina Circuit in the hope of stopping them from scoring enough points to take P6 in the Constructors'. During the race, the team ensured that Zhou Guanyu undercut Sebastian Vettel at the pit-stops, while Bottas extended his stint on the Hard tyre to stay out on track before Lance Stroll made his second visit to the pits. While Zhou and Bottas ultimately finished outside of the points in P12 and P15 respectively, Stroll and Vettel's P8 and P10 result was not enough for Aston to overtake Alfa on points. The two teams tied on 55 points each, but Alfa secure P6 thanks to Bottas' fifth place at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix beating any resul...

F1 veteran unlikely to return for 2023 season

Robert Kubica says it would "not be a surprise" if he were not to be part of a Formula 1 team in 2023. Pole Kubica has been the Alfa Romeo reserve driver since leaving Williams at the end of 2019 - and as part of a sponsor deal with the team, has taken part in free practice sessions as well as subbing for a COVID-positive Kimi Raikkonen in Holland and Italy '21. However, the 2008 Canadian Grand Prix said in Abu Dhabi that he felt his time in F1 was coming to an end - and has put a statement out on social media. "I finish the 2022 season with a good feeling, but it would not be a surprise if I no longer get a seat as an official driver in Formula 1 anymore," Kubica wrote on Twitter. He had fought back from horrendous injuries in a 2011 rally accident to undergo test in '17 with Renault and moved to Williams in '18 as a reserve driver before being promoted to partner rookie George Russell in '19 as Williams endured a troubled campaign ...

Zhou exclusive: I'm proud to have immediately delivered in F1

Image
As Formula 1 entered its new era in 2022, not much was certain given the complexity of the new regulations. Would one of the big teams stumble and drop the ball or could a midfield runner find a loophole in the rules to steal an advantage a la Brawn in 2009 with the double diffuser? One thing that was guaranteed however was that Zhou Guanyu would win 'Rookie of the Year' award by dint of being the only rookie on the 2022 grid. Stepping up from Formula 2, Zhou was partnered at Alfa Romeo by Valtteri Bottas - who elected to depart Mercedes after five seasons as Lewis Hamilton's sidekick. China's first ever full-time Grand Prix driver feels that while he gave a good acquittal of himself, learning from 10-time race winner Bottas was also a crucial part of his maiden campaign. The Frenchman has been linked with the vacant Team Principal post at Ferrari, after Mattia Binotto resigned from the role last month. Vasseur joined the squad in 2017 under its Sauber name before Alfa Romeo came on board for the 2019 campaign. In that time the Frenchman has worked with drivers including Kimi Raikkonen, Charles Leclerc and Valtteri Bottas, and led the team to their best championship position for a decade by finishing P6 in the Constructors' Championship in 2022. Vasseur: I have learnt so much at Alfa Romeo "As I prepare to bring my adventure at Alfa Romeo F1 Team ORLEN to an end, I can look back fondly at these six years together," Vasseur said. Former F1 driver takes aim at Bottas after Seidl move

Image
After the surprising move from McLaren's Andreas Seidl to move away from the team to take up a new role as CEO of Sauber, questions have arisen over the future plans of Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu. The appointment of Seidl is said to align with the strategic takeover of Sauber from Audi, with the brand set to enter as an engine manufacturer in 2026. Bottas has previously said he would like stick around for the evolution of the project, but Ralf Schumacher believes it might not as straightforward and that his time could be "counted" in the future. "I'm curious what ideas Andreas Seidl has with the drivers, there are also rumours," he told MotorsportTotal . "Zhou is more or less set, brings a lot of money with him, which is not unimportant until 2026, when Audi really comes. "But Bottas, one hears a bit, is counted and should not necessarily stay there too long." ...

Zhou reveals danger in 'crazy' F1 midfield battle

Image
Zhou Guanyu has labelled Formula 1 's midfield in 2023 as " crazy " and shared just how much impact a simple mistake can have on a race result. Alfa Romeo are in a clutch of teams in the lower midfield squabbling over position, with the outfit earning four points for Valtteri Bottas' eighth place finish in the Bahrain season-opener. Zhou has 16th and 13th place finishes to his name, and missed out on a Q3 berth in Saudi Arabia by just 0.050s on a strong weekend for him. He believes that the fine margins will be as important as ever given the competitive nature of the midfield in 2023. © XPBimages Zhou explains midfield battle "I mean realistically, we are fighting for P9 to P13 or P14," he explained to media, including TheFOXposts.Com . "Anything can happen and one little mistake or if one little thing goes wrong, you could be compromised from a points finis...

Zhou confident China will overcome F1 cancellations

Image
Zhou Guanyu is confident Formula 1 's popularity is rising in China despite the country's continued absence from the calendar. The series was due to return to the Shanghai International Circuit this weekend for the first time since 2019, only for China's Covid regulations to force a cancellation announcement in November last year. China has since relaxed its rules regarding visitors to the country, though the move came too late for F1 to act and reinstate the race to the schedule. The continued absence means Alfa Romeo driver Zhou will again miss out on enjoying the adulation of home support, with hopes for his wait to end in 2024 should China find a place in the bustling schedule. Speaking to Sky Sports ahead of the race's intended slot, Zhou conceded: "I'm disappointed but I kind of saw this coming because of the restrictions, we didn't open the border early enough. "So when we had the race scheduled for April, I knew everything was to...

Alfa Romeo predict 'different story' each race in F1 midfield battle

Image
Alfa Romeo Team Representative Alessandro Alunni Bravi believes Formula 1's midfield order will continue to exchange positions throughout the season. Whilst Red Bull have stolen a march at the top of the standings by virtue of three dominant victories from three in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Australia, the picture behind the Milton Keynes-based outfit has been muddled. The battle for best-of-the-rest between Aston Martin, Mercedes and Ferrari has taken the spotlight, but the fight between the rest of the grid for the minor points has failed to follow suit across the opening rounds. Each of the 10 teams have scored so far, underlining the com Pet itiveness that the new technical regulations introduced in 2022 have brought. Alfa Romeo introduced a front nose update last time out at Albert Park, and with all teams focusing on fine-tuning development under the budget cap, Alunni Bravi has warned the pecking order may not settle for the entirety of the campaign. Bottas reviews Alfa Romeo F1 picture after crucial team changes

Image
When Valtteri Bottas made the switch from World Championship-winning constructor Mercedes to Alfa Romeo last season, he would have been pleasantly surprised by the Hinwil-based outfit's start to the year. Alfa Romeo had finished ninth in the Constructors' standings in 2021 but was offered a new lease of life under Formula 1 's new technical regulations introduced last term. With Bottas and Zhou Guanyu, the team secured points in seven of the first nine races - including a stunning performance at the Spanish Grand Prix that saw the Finn battling Mercedes and Ferrari before winding up sixth, having finished fifth two races previous at Imola. But only four more points would be added to the tally across the remaining 13 races, with Alfa Romeo scraping sixth in the Constructors' from a resurgent Aston Martin team on countback alone - by virtue of Bottas' Imola performance. In an exclusive interview with TheFOXposts.Com , the 10-time Grand Prix winner outline...

Bottas identifies 'main focus' for Alfa Romeo: A lot of work to do

Image
Valtteri Bottas admits that Alfa Romeo's "main focus " needs to be on making a step forwards after failing to score points at the Miami Grand Prix. After struggling in the midfield battle so far in 2023, the team looked to have had a more positive day during qualifying at the Miami International Autodrome, with Bottas reaching Q3 and starting from P10 on the grid. However, the Finn was unable to match this on race day and slipped out of a points-paying position, eventually ending the event in P13. While Bottas feels there were good signs to take away from the weekend, he believes that Alfa Romeo have "a lot of work to do" in order to be regularly fighting for points again. Bottas: We must keep working to improve "There are some positives to take from this weekend, although there is still a lot of work to do to be fighting in the top 10," Bottas explained after the race. "The start of my race was quite good: we made up a f...
