BREAKING: Alfa Romeo team boss exits, linked with Ferrari switch

Alfa Romeo have announced that Team Principal Fred Vasseur will leave his role at the team.

Vasseur joined the squad in 2017 under its Sauber name before Alfa Romeo came on board for the 2019 campaign.

In that time the Frenchman has worked with drivers including Kimi Raikkonen, Charles Leclerc and Valtteri Bottas, and led the team to their best championship position for a decade by finishing P6 in the Constructors' Championship in 2022.

"As I prepare to bring my adventure at Alfa Romeo F1 Team ORLEN to an end, I can look back fondly at these six years together," Vasseur said.

"I owe a debt of gratitude to every single employee of the team, as they are the ones who got this team back on their feet and climbing the ladder of our sport.

"I am proud of the job we collectively have done as a team and a company, and even more so of the strong foundations we have laid for what’s to come next: but what I am the proudest of is the people that made this all possible, which in time have become friends.

"This team will always feel like home and I’ll be rooting for it wherever I go. I have learnt so much during my stint as a CEO and Team Principal and I feel each day has equipped me for what is to come.

"I know Alfa Romeo F1 Team ORLEN will keep going from strength to strength and I’m looking forward to seeing them comPete at the Business end of the grid in the next few years."

Sauber chairman thanks Vasseur

Finn Rausing, Sauber Holding AG Chairman of the Board of Directors, has praised the role that Vasseur played in leading the team for the past few years.

"Frederic gave our team six years of inspiring leadership and hard work, helping rebuild our company and our team," Rausing explained.

"He was able to encourage every one of us into giving our best and the increasingly good results we have enjoyed are testament to the quality of his performance at the helm of the team.

"He was the first to believe in our project and he leaves a team in a much stronger, Healthier position than when he arrived, with a bright future ahead of us, which is all that could have been asked of him.

"I am sure I echo everyone in the team when I wish Fred every success in his future endeavours."

Vasseur has been linked to a possible move to Ferrari following the recent announcement of Mattia Binotto's departure from the Scuderia.

News of Vasseur's exit from Alfa Romeo comes just one day after Williams confirmed that their CEO and Team Principal Jost Capito has left the British outfit with immediate effect, along with Technical Director FX Demaison.

With Vasseur having left the team, McLaren Team Principal Andreas Seidl is expected to come on board as CEO of Sauber, in a move influenced by Audi's recent strategic buy-in to the team ahead of its 2026 entry into F1.

Aston Martin dismiss concerns over impact of break in calendar

Aston Martin boss Mike Krack has dismissed any concerns over the recent four-week gap in the F1 calendar having an impact on the team's momentum. The squad had a strong start to the 2023 season, with Fernando Alonso claiming three consecutive podium results in the opening races. Lewis Hamilton set the pace during Free Practice 1 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in a session featuring several rookie drivers. Hamilton hit the top of the timesheets with a lap of 1:26.633 on the Soft tyre, while Mercedes teammate George Russell was two tenths of a second back in P2.
