Ben Sulayem keen for extra investment into stewarding

Image
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem is keen to see the governing body of Formula 1 make extra invest ment into stewarding on the single-seater ladder. The Premier League recently announced an injection of £25 million into grassroots refereeing to improve the standards of officials within the top-flight of English football. It is something Ben Sulayem feels the FIA should follow suit with, especially given the calendar expanse of recent times with 23 Grands Prix and six Sprint events scheduled in 2023, following the cancellation of the Chinese Grand Prix for a fourth successive year. Ben Sulayem wants extra investment Prior to the 2022 season, the FIA restructured race control at Grands Prix, with former race director Michael Masi relieved of his duties in the aftermath of the '21 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. In his place, Niels Wittich and Eduardo Freitas were drafted in as his replacemen...

F1 teams to receive extra allowance for 2023 Sprint races

Image
Sprint races are now firmly part of the Formula 1 calendar, with their inclusion set to expand further for the 2023 season. Six events are planned throughout the campaign, up from the three that have been held in both 2021 and 2022 as the new format is trialled. There were some disagreements earlier in the year about the doubling of the number of the Saturday events, but terms were finalised between F1 and the FIA. In the 2022 season, teams had an allowance of $150,000 USD per Sprint race to be deducted from the end of year costs, with a further $100,000 available for damage repair. Given the number of Sprint races in 2022, this figure is set to increase. Viewed by others: Daniel Ricciardo Why Ricciardo was 'glad' not to be offered a to...

Alpine questions whether 'extra time' rule would work in F1

Questions over whether Formula 1 could introduce an 'extra time' rule have been raised, after confusion at the end of the Australian Grand Prix. A record third red flag was thrown on Lap 57 following a chaotic standing restart, which saw Pierre Gasly take out his teammate Esteban Ocon and Fernando Alonso spun out of the podium by Carlos Sainz. As the final lap (Lap 58) had been started by leader Max Verstappen, a discussion ensued over whether the final order could be taken from the end of Lap 57 or on count back. After nearly 30 minutes the stewards elected to take the order from the last possible point, which was the grid for Lap 57. But could an extra time rule have enabled the final one-lap shootout to take place like in NASCAR or Formula E? This question was put to Alpine Team Principal, Otmar Szafnauer, whose drivers both crashed out on Lap 57 and dropped out the points. "[You mean] in that situation to have a little bit more racing or another red fl...
