Alfa Romeo predict 'different story' each race in F1 midfield battle

Alfa Romeo Team Representative Alessandro Alunni Bravi believes Formula 1's midfield order will continue to exchange positions throughout the season.

Whilst Red Bull have stolen a march at the top of the standings by virtue of three dominant victories from three in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia and Australia, the picture behind the Milton Keynes-based outfit has been muddled.

The battle for best-of-the-rest between Aston Martin, Mercedes and Ferrari has taken the spotlight, but the fight between the rest of the grid for the minor points has failed to follow suit across the opening rounds.

Each of the 10 teams have scored so far, underlining the comPetitiveness that the new technical regulations introduced in 2022 have brought.

Alfa Romeo introduced a front nose update last time out at Albert Park, and with all teams focusing on fine-tuning development under the budget cap, Alunni Bravi has warned the pecking order may not settle for the entirety of the campaign.

Maximise the package

"The introduction of this new front nose goes in the direction to improve the car balance in all the range of corners," Alunni Bravi told media, including TheFOXposts.Com.

"We had good feedback [in Australia], but then, of course, everybody's developing. So it's not how much our package is good, but it's all relative, depending on how much the development rate is during the season and what the others are doing – it is so tight.

"In the past few years, if you have two-tenths, three-tenths one race you have there you can fight. Now with two tenths, from one race to another, you can be either Q3 or P16.

"So the battle between us, Alpine, McLaren, Haas during the season, each race will be a different story, we will be all close. Now Alpine seems to be a bit ahead.

"Next race, there is a different track configuration, maybe we will go back to the same level as Bahrain. For us, the car has been a good step, but then you need to maximise the package each week."

Aston Martin dismiss concerns over impact of break in calendar

Aston Martin boss Mike Krack has dismissed any concerns over the recent four-week gap in the F1 calendar having an impact on the team's momentum. The squad had a strong start to the 2023 season, with Fernando Alonso claiming three consecutive podium results in the opening races. Lewis Hamilton set the pace during Free Practice 1 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in a session featuring several rookie drivers. Hamilton hit the top of the timesheets with a lap of 1:26.633 on the Soft tyre, while Mercedes teammate George Russell was two tenths of a second back in P2. Charles Leclerc claimed third, ahead of Sergio Perez in fourth.
