F1 to trial DRS usage changes in 2023 sprint races

Formula 1 is open to the possibility of revamping how DRS works during Grands Prix - with trials set to take place in the 2023 sprint races.

The proposal from the meeting of the F1 Commission in Abu Dhabi has proposed activation of DRS to be brought forward one lap upon the start and restart of races from the current period of two laps.

It is hoped by the Commission - attended by the likes of FIA President Mohammed ben Sulayem and F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali - that this change will "keep the field closer and encourage closer racing."

Should the plan be adopted, it will not feature in Grand Prix racing before the 2024 season.

At the six sprint races planned for the 2023 season, activation of the DRS will be trailed one lap earlier with the results evaluated before a final decision for '24 is made.

President ben Sulayem described Formula 1 as being in a "very strong position at the moment, and this growth and prosperity is thanks in no small part to the hard work of all the FIA staff, officials, volunteers and Stefano and his organisation.

The proposed DRS changes are subject to approval by the World Motorsport Council.

F1 teams facing Imola rain without tyre warmers

F1 teams are facing the prospect of racing in the wet at this weekend's Emilia Romagna Grand Prix without tyre warmers . In a sustainability push, F1 's official tyre supplier Pirelli are introducing a new full Wet compound for the Imola race that is designed to avoid the use of electric tyre blankets. Torrential rain over the last few days has caused severe disruption in the Emilia Romagna region, with widespread flooding causing power outages and leading to road closures. Though the rain is said to ease up from Wednesday evening onwards, it is likely that the Grand Prix weekend will be run in wet conditions, which will test Pirelli's new compound to the limit.
