Silverstone make modifications to Turn 1 run-off after 2022 Zhou crash

British Grand Prix venue Silverstone has made modifications to the Turn 1 run-off in response to Zhou Guanyu's 2022 Formula 1 crash.

At the start of last year's race, Pierre Gasly was caught in a wedge between Zhou's Alfa Romeo and the slow-starting Mercedes of George Russell.

As Gasly tagged Russell, the Mercedes was turned and clipped Zhou's car, flipping him into a series of rolls.

He eventually came to a stop after vaulting the catch-fencing, and was stuck in the car until he could be extricated, although he was fortunately without injury.

In response to the accident, the gravel trap to the side of the fast-right hander of Abbey has been removed and replaced with an asphalt run-off.

Managing director of Silverstone Stuart Pringle explained that this was because Zhou's Alfa Romeo dug into the gravel, causing the car to continue rolling.

As a result of the incident, the FIA also tweaked the rules for testing the roll-over hoop, with more stringent checks set to be mandatory from 2024.

Bottas takes two-wheeled adventure in Imola replacement race

Valtteri Bottas joined partner Tiffany Cromwell at a cycling race in Scotland after the cancellation of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix. The race at Imola was called off early in the week after extensive rainfall led to flooding and landslides in the surrounding region. Alfa Romeo driver Bottas did not take the weekend off for relaxation ahead of the Monaco and Spanish Grands Prix double-header though, instead taking part in the Gralloch Gravel event – part of the UCI Gravel World Series. The Finn excelled to finish 114th out of over 1,000 entrants in the 113km race, though he was outshone by Cromwell, who triumphed in the Women's race. F1 2023 Azerbaijan Grand Prix Qualifying results

Charles Leclerc nabbed pole position for Formula 1 's Azerbaijan Grand Prix, and will be joined on the front row by Max Verstappen. Having set the exact same time as Verstappen on the first runs in Q3, Leclerc improved by 0.242s on his second run, as Verstappen could only find 0.188s.
