Why Williams chose Sargeant for 2023

Williams have explained why they opted to sign rookie driver Logan Sargeant to join the team in 2023.

Sargeant – who, alongside racing in Formula 2, has long been a part of the Williams Academy – has been officially confirmed for the final place on the grid after achieving enough points to secure a super licence.

The American finished the 2022 F2 campaign in fourth place and was crowned rookie of the year.

Now Sargeant will make the step up to Formula 1 as Alex Albon's new teammate at Williams, with team boss Jost Capito praising how the youngster has integrated with the Grove-based squad.

Capito excited for Sargeant's 'journey'

"We’re delighted to officially announce Logan as our driver for next year after qualifying for a super licence following the final F2 event of the season in Abu Dhabi," Capito explained.

"Logan completes our exciting driver line-up for 2023 alongside Alex.

"Since joining our Driver Academy at the end of 2021, Logan has been able to fully integrate with the team at Grove while on the simulator and more recently at track during the four Free Practice sessions he’s participated in.

"He's had a strong rookie season in Formula 2, and we are excited to watch him make the step up in Formula 1. We are here to support that journey with him."

Williams 'proud' to give Sargeant F1 opportunity

Sven Smeets, Sporting Director at Williams, is pleased to see a member of the Driver Academy progress to a full-time seat in Formula 1.

"To be able to give Logan the opportunity to comPete in Formula 1 for Williams Racing next year after being an integral part of our Driver Academy is a proud moment for the team," Smeets said.

"Seeing a driver from the Academy getting in our F1 seat is a motivation for all the other Academy drivers and demonstrates legitimacy of the programme and the platform it provides.

"We are not only preparing him on track, but will be working hard over the winter off track to ensure he's in the best possible position to start 2023."

Sargeant replaces Nicholas Latifi, who has been left without an F1 seat following three seasons with Williams.

Aston Martin dismiss concerns over impact of break in calendar

Aston Martin boss Mike Krack has dismissed any concerns over the recent four-week gap in the F1 calendar having an impact on the team's momentum. The squad had a strong start to the 2023 season, with Fernando Alonso claiming three consecutive podium results in the opening races. Lewis Hamilton set the pace during Free Practice 1 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in a session featuring several rookie drivers. Hamilton hit the top of the timesheets with a lap of 1:26.633 on the Soft tyre, while Mercedes teammate George Russell was two tenths of a second back in P2.
