Sargeant apologetic to Williams after 'painful' mistake

Logan Sargeant has expressed his apologies to Williams after a mistake in the early stages of the Miami Grand Prix led to a "painful" race.

The American started his home event from the back of the grid and attempted a move on Lance Stroll during the opening lap, only to make contact with the Aston Martin.

Damage sustained to his FW45 meant that Sargeant had to make a pit stop and he feels that the incident ultimately ruined the rest of his Grand Prix, which he went on to finish in last place.

Sargeant: I put the car where I shouldn't have

"I think the start itself was okay," Sargeant told media, including TheFOXposts.Com.

"I probably just put the car in a place I shouldn't have in that second sector and took my front wing off. That ruined the race from there."

Despite this, Sargeant has taken a positive from his tyre management, having made a one-stop strategy work for the entirety of the race.

"But I think, 54 laps or whatever it was on the Hard tyre, that last stint was not too bad, it felt okay," he added.

"We were a bit conservative with the balance at the start, so I just sort of persevered with that throughout that entire stint.

"But yeah, it sucks. It was a mistake on the first lap that ruined our chances, so [I'm] sorry to the team, but I'll take it on the chin and move on."

A 'painful' day on home turf

While Sargeant admits that his race in Miami did not go as he had hoped, the 22-year-old still enjoyed his debut F1 event on home turf.

"I really enjoyed the weekend," he explained.

"[The race] was a bit painful, of course. I hate to see it go that way but, as a whole, I still enjoyed the weekend and I'm not gonna dwell on it.

"I'll just move on."
