Perez hints at cause of horror Saturday at Australian GP

Sergio Perez refused to be drawn on the specifics of his Formula 1 technical problems after qualifying for the Australian Grand Prix - but indicated it was to do with the brake balance.

The Mexican endured a horrendous Saturday in Melbourne, losing a chunk of time in FP3 with a car problem, and then continually locked up at Turn 3 throughout the session - also going off at Turn 1.

In the early stages of qualifying, he once again went off at Turn 3 and skated through the gravel, beaching the RB19 while also getting stuck in the mud.

He failed to set a time, and so will need to go to the stewards to formally get permission to race, which will be granted, but was reluctant to delve into the specifics of the issue he had.

Perez's bad day

"We had a technical issue from FP3, and we thought that we fixed it, but obviously we didn't," Perez told media including RacingNews365 in Melbourne.

"It was really difficult to do anything out there, I became a passenger as soon as I touched the brake.

"[The problem] is something moving the brake balance forwards on the brakes.

"I just hope that we are able to fix it for tomorrow and minimise the damage and trust the team fully to overcome the problem, and we have a strong race pace.

"It shows, the margin in qualifying, and how close everyone is and that if we can't put it together every Saturday and Sunday, the comPetition is really strong."

Aston Martin dismiss concerns over impact of break in calendar

Aston Martin boss Mike Krack has dismissed any concerns over the recent four-week gap in the F1 calendar having an impact on the team's momentum. The squad had a strong start to the 2023 season, with Fernando Alonso claiming three consecutive podium results in the opening races. Lewis Hamilton set the pace during Free Practice 1 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in a session featuring several rookie drivers. Hamilton hit the top of the timesheets with a lap of 1:26.633 on the Soft tyre, while Mercedes teammate George Russell was two tenths of a second back in P2.
