Williams sign F3 winner to driver programme

Williams have signed 19 year-old and Formula 3 race winner, Franco Colapinto, to their driver academy.

The Argentine driver joins the Williams Racing Driver Academy following an impressive rookie season in F3 with Van Amersfoort.

He claimed a maiden victory in the championship at the Imola round, along with podiums at Austria, Hungary and the Netherlands. This was followed by a win in the sprint race at Monza.

“It’s a real honour to join Williams Racing as an Academy Driver,” he said.

“They are one of the most successful teams in Formula 1 history and I am looking forward to following in the footsteps of my fellow countryman Carlos Reutemann.

"It’s an incredible opportunity for which I am forever grateful. Thanks to everyone at Williams for putting their trust in me.“

Goal to win F3 title in 2023

Colapinto will comPete in F3 again during the 2023 season, however he will be switching to MP Motorsport - who won last year's F2 title.

It's also a team that Colapinto has raced with in the Eurocup and Formula Regional European Championship.

He added: "The goal is to reach even higher this time. My first year in FIA F3 was all about learning and I will use all the knowledge I’ve gathered to aim for the title."

Ecclestone in court for fraud pre-trial hearing

Former Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone has arrived in court in London for the latest hearing ahead of his fraud criminal trial later this year. Ecclestone, 92, served as F1 CEO, stepping down when Liberty Media took control of the series in late 2016, being given the title 'chairman emeritus'. United Kingdom tax authorities His Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) have alleged that Ecclestone failed to declare more than $400 million held in a trust fund in Singapore. He faces one case of fraud by false representation between June 2013 and October 2016, and although he is yet to enter a plea, it is expected Ecclestone is to plead not guilty. He was joined at the pre- trial hearing at London's Southwark Crown Court by wife Fabiana, with the hearing being overseen by Mr Justice Bryan. Liberty: US F1 races will become 'distinctive' over time

Each Formula 1 Grand Prix in the United States will find their "distinctiveness" over time, according to Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei with three races in 2023. Under the ownership of Liberty Media, F1 has experienced a boom in popularity in the US - a market the series has long craved a foothold in, with the Miami Grand Prix joining the calendar in 2022 to supplement the official United States Grand Prix in Austin. For 2023, another race will be held in America as F1 returns to Las Vegas for a Saturday night primetime race on the strip. It will be only the second time in the history of the World Championship that one country has held three races in a calendar year, although the Monza, Mugello and Imola races in Italy in 2020 was due to the COVID-19 pandemic and not through targeted expansion.
