Vettel was 'coming alive' in final F1 qualifying

Image
Sebastian Vettel was "coming alive" in Abu Dhabi Grand Prix qualifying, as he will line up ninth for his final ever Formula 1 race. Four-time World Champion Vettel escaped Q1 in the dying stages at Yas Marina and was able to advance through to Q3. Using only one set of new Slot tyres, Vettel's effort was quick enough for seventh, but was later shuffled down to P9, and will start alongside old rival Fernando Alonso once Daniel Ricciardo's grid penalty was applied. Marko relieved with Verstappen pole: Order restored after our fiasco

Image
Helmut Marko feels that "order has been restored " after Red Bull secured a 1-2 in qualifying for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Max Verstappen claimed pole position in Saturday's session, with Sergio Perez joining him on the front row. Perez praised his teamwork with Verstappen after qualifying, seemingly drawing a line under the team orders controversy that affected the team last time out in Brazil. The performance in Abu Dhabi has left Marko feeling relieved. "First and second place! After the fiasco in Brazil, we are happy that the order has been restored ," Marko told Austrian broadcaster Servus TV . Marko was impressed by how Verstappen managed some issues that arose during the session. "Verstappen's dashboard failed twice, but he was not bothered by that," he continued. "At another point there was another problem with the front wing, but at the moment it counted, Max just delivered!" ...

Alonso will aim to protect Vettel in final F1 race

Image
Fernando Alonso will aim to "take care" of Sebastian Vettel in the four-time World Champion's final Formula 1 race in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Alonso – who is sporting a Vettel tribute helmet this weekend – qualified 11th at the Yas Marina Circuit, with old rival Vettel ninth for his 299th and final Grand Prix start before retirement. However, as Daniel Ricciardo is set for a three-place grid drop for colliding with Kevin Magnussen in Brazil, it promotes Alonso to 10th, meaning that he will share the fifth row of the grid with Vettel. The two-time World Champion says he hopes to be able to protect Vettel during the race. Alonso on Vettel "I was very happy," Alonso explained to media, including TheFOXposts.Com , after qualifying. "It's not that we tried to help him, but we are trying to have an eye on him, when we see him in the mirror or when he...

Hamilton loses pole record, blames 'track specific' issues with W13

Image
Lewis Hamilton blamed " track specific " issues with the W13 for the reason why he couldn't challenge for pole and maintain his career record in qualifying for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The seven-time World Champion had achieved a pole in every season he's participated in prior to the session, with this one being the last opportunity of 2022 to maintain that record . But after qualifying in fifth – nearly seven tenths off the pace – Hamilton blamed the issues with the W13, including porpoising, for why the team are so far off despite leading the way in practice on Friday. "[I] definitely wasn't expecting to see such a big gap, but we're losing six tenths on the straights," Hamilton told media, including TheFOXposts.Com . "It's kind of reminiscent of some of the previous races before Austin, [and the] bouncing is back, which is costing us time." Hamilton also noted the issues they've had with their brakes, which h...

Wolff explains why Mercedes went 'backwards' in qualifying

Image
Toto Wolff has explained why Mercedes "went backwards " in qualifying for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix after looking stronger earlier in the weekend. The team set the pace during Friday's opening practice session, having arrived at the Yas Marina Circuit off the back of their 1-2 victory last time out in Brazil. However, Lewis Hamilton and George Russell slipped behind both Red Bull and Ferrari in Saturday's qualifying , with the pair set to line up in P5 and P6 respectively. Wolff couldn't hide his disappointment following the session, having told Sky Sports F1 : "I think that's one to put in the toilet." Wolff: We didn't get the job done Wolff feels that – as well as Ferrari appearing to make progress – the direction that the Silver Arrows took for the session may not have been the right one. "We didn't get the job done," the tea...

Ricciardo 'relieved' with performance in final qualifying for McLaren

Image
Daniel Ricciardo admits that reaching Q3 in his final qualifying with McLaren at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was "a bit of a relief". The Australian is coming to the end of his two-year tenure at the Woking-based squad following the mutual decision to terminate his multi-year contact early, meaning that he has been left without a race seat for 2023. With the F1 weekend at the Yas Marina Circuit set to be his last for the time being, Ricciardo was happy to qualify in P10, though he will drop three places due to a penalty for a collision with Kevin Magnussen last time out in Brazil. Ricciardo happy for himself and Vettel Given his struggles during 2022, Ricciardo was satisfied with his stronger performance in qualify ing at Abu Dhabi. "I won't miss my lack of competitiveness this year," he told Viaplay . "Qualifying certainly hasn't been my strong suit obvi...

Horner reveals how Red Bull teamwork secured Abu Dhabi front row

Image
Christian Horner says Red Bull "could not have asked for a better Saturday" as both drivers worked together to secure a Formula 1 front row lockout in Abu Dhabi Grand Prix qualifying. Team orders have been in the spotlight at Red Bull in the last week after Max Verstappen refused to obey them in Brazil to assist Sergio Perez's efforts to secure P2 in the Drivers' championship. Verstappen's decision to stay in front of Perez means the latter goes level on points with Charles Leclerc into the finale - but crucially managed to get ahead of Leclerc on the grid by just 0.040s - in part thanks to Verstappen. It was this teamwork that Horner was pleased to see in practice. Viewed by others: Toto Wolff Wolff explains why Mercedes went...

Hamilton reveals feelings about troublesome 2022 Mercedes

Image
Lewis Hamilton says he is "looking forward" to not driving the Mercedes W13 again after losing his pole position record in Formula 1 qualifying at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Speaking after losing the qualifying record, Hamilton admitted he couldn't wait to see the back of the W13 machine. Image
Sebastian Vettel is not focused on his impending Formula 1 retirement as Aston Martin still face a challenge in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Vettel will start his 299th and final Grand Prix from ninth on the grid after a strong qualifying session at Yas Marina, with Aston currently seventh in the Constructors' standings. They are just five points behind Alfa Romeo in the race for sixth place, and with both Aston's ahead of the Alfa duo on the grid, Vettel is keen to go out strongly and deliver the higher position for the team. How Leclerc can deny Perez Red Bull F1 history

Image
Unlike 2021, it's been pretty clear where the Formula 1 World Drivers' Championship would be heading in 2022. Max Verstappen has been in a class of one this season, breaking records for most wins and most points in a single season (14 and 429 and counting for those keeping score.) Attention has thus turned onto who will finish as runner-up: Verstappen's teammate Sergio Perez or Charles Leclerc of Ferrari. It will go down to the final race with nothing separating the two - and only 0.040s advantage in Perez's favour in qualifying at Yas Marina as they line up second and third. Should Perez claim it, he will secure Red Bull's first ever one-two in the Drivers', which is just about the only thing they haven't achieved in F1. Below is how P2 in the standings will be won - or indeed lost. Runner-up in the standings Heading into the finale in Abu Dhabi, Leclerc ...

Abu Dhabi weather update: What's in store for Sunday's race?

Image
As with previous editions of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Sunday's race at the Yas Marina Circuit will be run in warm and dry conditions, with no chance of rain. According to our friends at WeerOnline.nl , the circuit will see highs of 29 degrees Celsius on Sunday, cooling to around 27 degrees by the time the race starts at 17:00 local time. Last F1 2023 seat officially claimed

The final seat on the 2023 Formula 1 grid has been officially claimed by American Logan Sargeant, who will race alongside Alex Albon at Williams . Sargeant completed the Formula 2 Championship at Abu Dhabi, securing fourth in the Drivers' Championship after finishing in P6 and P5 in the Sprint and Feature races. Williams Team Principal, Jost Capito, announced Sargeant would join the team on the condition that he would earn enough superlicence points by the end of the season. The American needs 40 points to earn a superlicence, having previously picked up 27 superlicence points from his season in Formula 3 in 2021 – plus two more bonus points for completing it without incident. He then earned three more bonus points for completing 100km+ during FP1 sessions at the United States, Brazil, and Abu Dhabi without picking up a reprimand. Sargeant had to finish within the top seven in the F2 Drivers' Championship, with the fourth place being enough to claim 30 points...

Ferrari trial last components ahead of 2023

Image
The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is not only the last race of the World Championship, but also the last opportunity to test solutions on the track to be integrated into the 2023 projects. Indeed, it is common practice among all the teams to instrument the cars with aero sensors to gather final pieces of data on track before the off season. Ferrari carried out an important data collection in Friday practice with Carlos Sainz, whose F1 -75 had been heavily instrumented with an intricate network of sensors mounted on rakes behind the rear wheels. The function is to measure the pressure of the air flow leaving the diffuser and behind the rear wheels. The lower side has been modified in the area in front of them, with the function of managing turbulence in the area between the inside of the rear wheels and the diffuser in a different way from what happened during the season. These are not radical changes, but they are capable of increasing the effectiveness of the underbody by genera...
