Formula 1 is aiming to introduce a simplified calendar in the upcoming seasons, with the target of reducing travel-based emissions. As part of the target to achieve 'net zero' emissions by 2030, F1 is negotiating with promoters to adopt a "more regional approach" to the schedule. Rudy van Buren – known for being one of the fastest sim racers around – took on a new role in 2022 as Red Bull's Simulator Test and Development Driver. The news was confirmed over the summer but, according to Max Verstappen , van Buren had been "unofficially" working with the team for some time. Azerbaijan, Belgium, the United States and Qatar are set to host Formula 1 Sprint races for the first time in 2023 as the schedule has been officially confirmed. Plans were made earlier in 2022 to increase the number of Sprint races from three to six for 2023, with teams set to receive extra allowance in terms of costs as a result. The format will remain the same, with qualifying taking place on the Friday to set the grid for the one-third distance Sprint, which in turn decides the grid for Sunday's main Grand Prix. F1 cars look set to be lighter and shorter from 2026, according to Nikolas Tombazis, the FIA's Single Seater Technical Director. Over the course of recent years, the weight of Formula 1 cars has increased, with factors including electrical systems, heavier engines and improved safety all contributing to the changes. Despite this continued progression of Technology in the sport, Tombazis believes that the plan to reduce weight in 2026 is feasible.
