Arnoux: Verstappen slaughtered everyone several times in 2022

Image
Former F1 driver Rene Arnoux believes that Max Verstappen "slaughtered" everybody in the field on more than one occasion in 2022. While Arnoux feels that Verstappen's 2021 championship victory came down to "the least intelligent Safety Car decision ever", the Frenchman was left impressed by how the title was won during the most recent season. "This year, Verstappen and Red Bull were supreme," Arnoux told Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport . "Several times , like at Zandvoort for example, he slaughtered everyone in the race. "In my eyes, Charles Leclerc comes close to him, but Verstappen still has that little bit more." Arnoux: Verstappen can brake later than anyone In terms of what gives Verstappen that "bit more" than his rivals, Arnoux referred back to the start of the Japanese Grand Prix, the shortened rain...

Wolff names driver he thinks 'deserves' future Red Bull seat

Image
Toto Wolff hopes that Nyck de Vries will be successful enough at AlphaTauri to earn a promotion to the main Red Bull team in the future. De Vries acted a reserve driver for Mercedes before being handed an opportunity to join the F1 grid in 2023 with the AlphaTauri outfit, having impressed many after making a substitute appearance for an unwell Alex Albon at Williams during the 2022 Italian Grand Prix weekend. The Dutchman will now become a part of the Red Bull stable, after being given a memorable send-off by the Silver Arrows at the season-closing race in Abu Dhabi. Why Albon feels 2022 was his 'best year in F1' after comeback

Image
Alex Albon has hailed 2022 as his "best year in Formula 1" following his return to the grid after a year on the sidelines. The British-Thai driver found himself without a race seat in 2021 when Red Bull opted to replace him with Sergio Perez, though he was retained by the team as a test and reserve driver. Albon then made a comeback with Williams in 2022 and, while the team finished at the bottom of the Constructors' Championship standings, the 26-year-old is proud of what he personally achieved given his prior time away from the track. "Obviously, we were 10th in the Constructors' this year," Albon told the F1 Nation podcast. "It's not where we want to be. It's obviously not where Williams want to be. "It's a tale of two halves where, when I look at the season as a whole, I'm very happy about it. I've had a year away from the sport, and it's not always guaranteed, your success, coming back. "I'...

Audi have set out their goals for their partnership with Sauber ahead of their 2026 entry into F1 . It was confirmed in October that the manufacturer would make the Swiss squad their works team, with the two sides set to become "strategic partners". Audi will provide the engines, while Sauber will continue to build and develop the chassis at their base in Hinwil, Switzerland. Ahead of the link-up, Audi are hopeful of being able to battle at the front in the future. Audi set out targets for F1 entry "We have committed for the period 2026 to 2030. We want to com Pet e for victories after three years," Managing Director Adam Baker told DPA . "The new technical [engine] regulations create opportunities for newcomers to be competitive quickly. Moreover, with the budget cap, everyone has the same opportunities and all face the same challenge. "If...

Wolff: 'Exciting' prospect lured Mercedes down wrong path

Image
Toto Wolff says his Mercedes Formula 1 team were lured into the "exciting" possibilities of floor development in 2022, which proved to be the major factor behind their drop in performance. After the technical rules were revamped for 2022, ground effects were re-introduced into F1 for the first time since the 1970s, with Mercedes among those teams expected to fight for the championship, having won 15 of the previous 16 on offer. In order for the breed of car to produce downforce, it needs to be run as close to the ground as is possible to generate performance. However, a side effect of ground effects is porpoising, where the car gets so low that it bottoms out and loses aerodynamic grip before the airflow reattaches and creates downforce once again. It is this up and down motion which so badly affected cars during pre-season testing. Mercedes have revealed that a single decision taken in regards to the floor in October 2021 was the root cause behind their slump to...

Verstappen pinpoints worst weekend from title-winning 2022

Image
Max Verstappen has highlighted the Singapore Grand Prix weekend as the worst in his all-conquering second Formula 1 championship winning season. Verstappen crushed the field in 2022, claiming 15 wins from 22 races plus victory in two of the three Sprint events to host new records for most wins and points in a single season, respectively. Following a second place finish in Austria, Verstappen would go onto win nine of the remaining 11 races of the season, with Singapore and Brazil the two he did not after various incidents in both. While Red Bull admitted to set-up mistakes at Interlagos, errors in Singapore cost Verstappen throughout the weekend. Why Coulthard is confident of Ferrari 2023 championship bid

Image
David Coulthard is confident that Ferrari are in the right position to bid for the F1 World Championship in 2023. The 2022 campaign got off to a strong start for the Scuderia, with Charles Leclerc taking the lead in the Drivers' standings after winning two of the opening three races. However, a series of issues including strategic mishaps, driver errors and reliability concerns led to Ferrari 's challenge falling away, while Red Bull and Max Verstappen took the momentum en route to claiming both the Constructors' and Drivers' Championships. In terms of why Ferrari 's season went off course, Coulthard believes that this may be down to the team not having being used to regularly fighting at the front for some time. "There might be an element of just not being match fit, having not operated at that level [for a while]," Coulthard told the Mirror Sport . " Ferrari are the most famous name in Formula 1 , and have been the longest running...

Dieter Rencken’s F1 season that was 2022

Image
After two years of Covid-driven chaos, 2022 was the year that saw Formula 1 return to (semi)-normality. I say "semi" as the year opened to a continuation of mask-wearing across the paddock and bans on media in team hospitalities except by invitation. Plus, it was a given that one or two races would be cancelled as host countries such as China persisted with Travel restrictions. The year was, of course, the first in over a decade under a new FIA President - Emirati Mohammed Ben Sulayem - who obviously pursued a different path to that of predecessor Jean Todt. Indeed, that became clear when the FIA released its report into the fiasco that was Abu Dhabi 2021 - a debacle inherited from the previous regime – and MBS’s refusal to be pushed by F1 into signing off a doubling in sprint races to six. However, the biggest change by some distance was to F1’s regulations: primarily Technical and Sporting, although the effects of the Financial Regulations introduced in 2021 ...

Ricciardo assesses impact of Red Bull cost cap penalty

Image
Daniel Ricciardo admits that Red Bull's 10 per cent loss of their aerodynamic development allowance as a result of breaching the 2021 cost cap is a "serious number", but the punishment is one he expects the team to be able to manage. The penalty was confirmed in October, alongside the Milton Keynes-based squad having to pay a $7 million fine due to the breach. Various responses emerged across the paddock, with team boss Christian Horner arguing that the loss of aerodynamic development could cost them "up to half a second per lap", while Ferrari's Laurent Mekies expressed concerns over whether the punishment would have enough of an impact . Ahead of his return to the squad as a reserve driver for 2023, Ricciardo has given his take on the issue. Ricciardo reflects on Red Bull penalty "You can't deny that it doesn't hurt, because, when you...

Szafnauer explains Alpine's key improvement made in 2022

Image
While it's well documented that Alpine had their fair share of reliability issues with Fernando Alonso in 2022, they still produced one of their most com Pet itive years in the midfield. This is because they made some key improve ments in the lead times to produce car upgrades, which enabled them to finish ahead of McLaren in the Constructors' Championship. Otmar Szafnauer says this was one of the first areas he looked at when he joined as Team Principal at the start of 2022. "One of the big things I did when I first got here was look at how long it takes us to bring upgrades to the track. It took us a long time, longer than I was used to at other places," he told media, including TheFOXposts.Com . "We had a just a bit of a subgroup to look at how we could do things differently, release things a little bit earlier from the tunnel and start some of the engineering work early." ...

Update: 2023 Chinese Grand Prix return inches closer

Image
On Monday RacingNews365 revealed that Juss Events, promoter of the Chinese Grand Prix, is intent on hosting a 2023 edition of the race on the original date of 16th April. According to sources, the go-ahead to negotiate for the return of the event with Formula One Management was granted during a high-level meeting, convened today in Shanghai. RacingNews365 understands that the meeting was chaired by Chinese Communist Party Secretary and Member of the Politburo Chen Jining, who plans to showcase the Grand Prix as a return to sporting normality and international acceptance for the country. China lifts all travel restrictions after a ‘hard’ COVID lockdown on 8th January, and the event would mark the first major event in the country since the Winter Olympics in 2022. Jining’s blessing paves the way for Juss Events to approach FOM with a government-backed proposal, which would be difficult to counter given that the April date is still open. However, FOM is believed to be conc...
